I am looking at the dell minis.
The first thing I found to be a concern is that they all come with 1 GIG of ram.
They run Windows XP. I wonder how it runs with the normal uses. Anyone tried these?

Just build a beefy desktop and run VM's, or get a nice slim and powerful laptop and do the same. I looked at netbooks for a while for automation stuff, just not worth it in the long run

It would not be as a main computer.
This is just for web and word processing on the move. Got a powerful laptop at home.

ive got an asus eee and a lenovo mini.

the eee sits in my SUV for when I need it on the road ( with a usb phone card ) and the lenovo sits in the kitchen for when I need to check something when there.

all other computers are full size laptops or desktops in other areas.

the 1gb has not been an issue. The eee actually has 512 running xp pro and the lenovo is 1gb running xp home.

only issue I get is sometimes opening apps and browsers, the lower part of the window gets cuts off, even at the smallest resolution possible.

i have an original eee pc and it's terrible, not recommended. I know they changed a lot of stuff on the newer ones and they look better.

I'm currently debating between a good desktop + 13" subnotebook or just a monster 17" laptop, but if I go 17" laptop I need one that won't cook my dick.

yeah man, dick cooking is what drove me to my current acer, this damn thing never gets hot. It's only 15.6" though, and I don't play games, so that contributes to a lot. But I still run a lot of things at once and it holds up perfectly fine

I use an asus eee because it was the cheapest model at Best Buy. I didn't see a reason to look at anything besides price.

It works great. No complaints. I've been using it since my laptop died while I look for a nice desktop setup. I run itunes, all my ims, and chrome without any slow down. I even use paint.net to edit images, it's a little slow, but it works fine. The only issue is, like noted above, some sites and programs are unusable because things are cut off.

Bought an ASUS eee for wife last summer, and it's very good. I'm not a fan of the Dell minis, plus this one gets over 9 hours of battery life. She runs Word, Excel, email, and firefox all at the same time with no issues on the 1 gig.

Another vote for the asus eee over here. I've had one a while and its great for portability - small, light, long battery life. I was sick of having a laptop in which the battery died after being unplugged for an hour..what's the point of that?

Works fine for basic stuff but sucks to work on. I built my desktop and its a beast - everything is super quick because I built it partially to run some games on. When I have to wait for programs to start and it takes more than a second i get kind of impatient but over all the netbooks are a great deal if you are using them appropriately.

I use a standard Asus (Advent) type netbook, and love it for basic net lookup stuff.
Couple of tips;

1) Use Firefox for browsing, remove bookmarks toolbar, use sidebar bookmarks view instead.
2) then add AdBlock Plus addon, this removes annoying ads which take up valuable screen area on netbook.
3) Screen still not big enough? , press F11 to go fullscreen.

i use HP 500 to do my activities, browsing using firefox fast, editing all my docs. but when i need to do some design, i back to my desktop. Dell. ;)

used to have an eepc900 now have a samsung nc110, loving the samsung as it gets over 10 hrs of life outta that bad boy battery.
recommended my brother get a samsung 510 and that thing rocks

as for ram its not an issue, keep your installs small and clean and you wont have any issues also its piss easy to replace any ram in any netbook with a 2gb stick.

see here for minimizing your windows install
[winxp] GUIDE: Making your windows folder smaller! - Neowin Forums

did the above on the eeepc and never had an issue apart from it being faster.

its also easy to duel boot with linux
thing to remember is its a netbook so as long as you keep it a relatively cleean machine it will do exactly what you want to do on the move, just dont do what a lot seem to do and expect full desktop performance and storage from it

I have a MSI Wind U100, as my one and only computer (for now). Hooked up to a larger monitor I have had my server open, dreamweaver open, photoshop open and youtube going. Not the quickest out of the blocks but it is by no means THAT slow.

The new Wind's are superb by all accounts. I'd recommend them, particularly if you take your lap top while traveling, as they are unbeatable. Very good screen, can use it outdoors without too much glare if that interests you as well.
