all i know is that travis browne is impressing the shit outta me lately. i could see him becoming an issue in the hw division in the next few years. at 6'7 dude has some SERIOUS knockout power. it looked like struve got hit by a concrete brick attached to a telephone poll when he went down. i can't think of too many heavyweights in the world right now that would give him serious trouble....and dude is only like 11-0-1 or something? I never even heard of the guy until a year ago.

i'd pretty much agree with your picks, aside from a few. i could see mitrione knocking out morecraft for sure. i wouldnt completely count out verdum in the sf tourney, but my money is for sure on overeem. if somehow brett rogers came out looking like a maniac and ended up winning the whole tourney it would be amazing...but thats just me looking for some extra excitement out of the whole thing...VERY doubtful lol especially after i saw the way overeem ragdolled his ass around the cage when they met.

i could see marquart beating johnson too, probably by decision as i can see johnson gassing if it goes the distance...should be a good fight though. barry will probably beat kongo with leg kicks, and if/when he does, he should fight browne in my opinion. they had some beef between them awhile back to settle too...winner of that should start taking on some "upper tier" HWs now IMO.

my money is jds as well, but carwin is a BIG dude. this is why i'd ultimately like to see a "super heavyweight" division eventually in the UFC. think about it, every weight class goes up by increments. most guys at hw are one of the following: 6 ft- 6'3 around 220-230. THEN there are the lesnars and browne and carwin mutants popping up more and more, and they will continue to appear as MMA grows. to me, that is a MASSIVE size differential to compete with, and it doesn't happen in any other weight class really. a dude that weighs in around 230 (probably had to PUT ON weight) and is 6'2 often fights a dude that has to cut weight to even reach 265...oh and he might be 6'7 or so lol (though height is obviously less of the issue here).

i used to think the massive weight/size differentials just made things more exciting in the HW division, but as a fan of MMA for 10 plus years, i am starting to see "size" become more of an issue...jds has the skill and talent to beat carwin on any day of the week IMO...but carwin is so big that it is CLEAR power advantage in terms of sheer weight that cannot be denied.

im pretty sure jds would have a difficult time hitting anything above 240 fighting weight, while carwin will do some serious cutting just to make weigh in. to me, this is the equivalent of a lw at 155 fighting a middleweight. people would be like the "wtf"?. jds is taller than carwin but weight is the issue here...still i don't see jds losing at all.

and pettis/guida will be a sick fight. both guys put on a show everytime.

I've always wanted to see less weight divisions. Particularly on the lighter end. Maybe a bw + fw division. IMO being bigger isn't always an advantage. Guys like carwin, lesnar are always slower and less athletic.

And guys who cut down are usually taller. Being taller definitely is a disadvantage as you can see in the struve/browne fight. Taller fighters like struve struggle to find their opponents chin. And unless they are bulky like lesnar they also have a disadvantage in the takedown department.

It's just that fighters are not using the right strategies when they vs bigger guys. The smaller guy wants to always keep a distance from the punches/td when he should be getting right up in their face like what velasquez did to lesnar.

Until you get someone technically superior like Cain Velasquez. I think he would walk through Carwin too. JDS would of been his biggest trouble, and I think his wrestling background would of overcame that.

Actually Carwin has lost some weight, was reading on mmajunkie today Healed and hungry, Shane Carwin predicts fireworks in UFC 131 headliner | MMAjunkie.com hes gonna be around 250, still big but remember he used to be walking into the ring at 280 after the cut!

ufc 137

gsp vs diaz

nice, diaz should make it exciting (gsp still will win).

previous posters:

if carwin is healthy, he's knocking junior the fuck out - round 1.
if he's not, junior will wear him down take it late round 2 or even by decision. if he couldn't finish fat country, i really doubt he can finish carwin.
the winner will beat cain imo.

as far as a need for a "super heavyweight" = no.
all those 230ish guys that can't hang can cut to 205
(spider silva walks around at 230 and cuts to 185,
rampage walks around at 250 and cuts to 205 and so on).

Fat country isn't getting finished by anyone in the UFC. I think your underestimating the power in JDS hands...

Cain Velasquez is the best HW champ the UFC has ever had. No heavy weight has been able to throw technical combos / strikes with such a well rounded ground game. He's very much like GSp in being able to adapt to your style, but he finishes fights...

Silva still p4p best fighter in the world.

They need to matchup Machida with Bones Jones too. I feel that Machida (aside from Rashad) is one of the very few people globally at LHW that can outsmart/outpoint Jon Jones. If rashad and machida can't beat him at 205...I don't see him losing that belt for a lonnnnnng time.

Agree with rancor, big country has one of the best chins in all of MMA. I don't even know if the guy has ever really been knocked out? jds vs cain NEEDS to happen. i won't count carwin out of the hw picture...but that loss to brock left a bad taste in my mouth. brock lesnar NEEDS to leave mma.

i don't see cain losing for a lonnnng time either, unless he fights jds.

once silva beats okami i really hope they make that fight with gsp at an agreed upon weight. will be one of the best superfights of all time. either way, silva has pretty much wrapped up the entire division...so he needs to move up in weight to keep things interesting or just retire on top imo.

gsp needs to move up to 185 as well...dude has run through his division pretty well at this point.

i love MMA, but the ufc is starting to "stagnate" at the upper levels imo. cain, jones, silva, and gsp are probably not going to lose at their current weight for a LONG time (unless they fight one or two specific people each)...so they really need to be on point with their matchups leading into the next year. i just hate watching fights that you pretty much KNOW are going to end with a specific fighters hand raised...and alot of the UFC's championship fights (in MOST weight classes) have been like that lately it seems like...and i don't see a lot of TRUE competitive matchups being worked on at this point. i've just been watching some of these guys forever it seems like, and they still get pitted against "6's" for their championship fight when they are are a clear "9.5", just because they're DUE to fight a few times a year.

some guys are just TOO GOOD at their current weight class...
