I just found out about this Youtube series produced by Machinima.

It's about time someone tried to revive this piece. They've done a pretty good job for a short series. The only complaint I have is that season 1 episodes were only about 8-12 minutes each.

Season 2 is supposed to be coming online in full at 9am PST today. Season 1 was promising, and this season supposedly has a larger budget to work with.

Check out the trailer. I wonder how much return they're going to make from it.

I'm a pretty big fan of the way Season 1 was put together. I downloaded all of the episodes and watched them in one sitting. The storylines were great, but maybe I'm just a sucker for nostalgia. One of my favorites was Sub-Zero (Bi-Han version)/Scorpion and alternative Raiden one - probably the best. Actually now that I think about it The Kitana & Mileena story was pretty great, and the way Shang Tsung is being portray is spectacular.

Full Season 2 just released.

The low budget production quality is killing the franchise for me. These episodes seem just as shitty as the movies, except even more "home-made".

I still love the games though, especially the most recent one.

Machinima is putting a lot of money currently into unique content produced by "amateur" film-makers. They gave us $40k to put together this:

I honestly have no idea how well it's working out for them, but my guess is that they are at least breaking even on it because they keep spending money on this kind of thing as well as on more expensive stuff, like the Mortal Kombat series and the Halo: Forward Unto Dawn series.

In my mind, they are trying to do something similar to what Netflix is doing with original content. This is really the future of TV/movies in my opinion.

One other thing, I think that this lower budget type of content production has a lot of potential because it allows to make niche-focused content.

Even though our short film, for example, is not as high quality of production as say, Game of Thrones, we still got a fair amount of people that enjoyed watching because it is new content about something that they like and care about. They are willing to overlook the amateurish nature of the production.

It's pretty good considering budget constraints. Wish they were each around 15 minutes though. The beginning and end of every episode feels chopped up, but the fight scenes are good enough.

Yes! I completely agree. The beauty is that we can get a little more detailed story-lines and look deeper into character development - things that would have been cut out or simply grazed over in a big budget movie. They can tell story-lines that lead up to the event and even the aftermath, it opens up a whole world of possibilities in a story.

I have been waiting months for this thanks a lot for bringing it up I would have missed it otherwise! Season 1 was just epic let's see what season 2 has to offer!

I wonder how much more expensive it would have done to get manga or comics drawn instead of a live-action film. I know if they would have released a manga or b/w comic I would have read that on a weekly basis. I wonder why more games don't do it.
