From what I've read, this is really bad. But I'm trying to better understand why?

And how many is too many? If I have 3-5 sites with the same hosting and the same adsense account, is it too many? what about 8-10 sites?

I'm just trying to understand why people warn about this, why it's an issue, etc.

From google's point of view, I don't see why they'd automatically penalize you for registering a few different domains with the same host, and putting ads up on each of your sites. But I'm new to IM so there's a lot I don't understand =)

There is no problem with having multiple sites on a single host. That's not the issue.

It's when you have the sites Inter-linking to each other, in an attempt to "boost your pagerank" or other SEO factors, that it becomes an issue. If you rank each website on it's own merit, without attempting to boost another site by interlinking with it, you're more than fine. That's some of the details a lot of people leave out, cause they assume you are automatically going to link to each of your websites, so they say not to do it.

Essentially, when a link from one website goes to another, if the IP address is on the same C Class, or even B Class, then Google thinks you may own/control that website, so it's your website. When they see that they might consider the actions as an attempt to manipulate your SEO Rankings.

If IP address C class or B class confuses you, the easiest analogy is your neighborhood where you live. Google sends visitors your way, the only way to more visitors you need people to vouch/vote (links) for you. Well, if they see that only people in your neighborhood are vouching for you, or essentially only a dozen people from within your own house (same IP address), then those votes look suspicious. So you got to go outside your neighborhood for votes (links), outside your city, state, country, etc. Get as many votes as possible from different areas (IP address diversification).

Just don't interlink your websites, Unless they are relevant, but don't do it for a "Google" purpose, and you're fine. You're not going to get any additional SEO benefits, cause they are on the same IP address or same server, or even same hosting.

Carry on...

Thanks for the explanation, CCarter.

I currently don't interlink my sites at all. Thanks again for the insight!

What ccarter said, but I'd like to add that if you do everything through the same host/IP or the same adsense account you become very transparent.

For instance, if I wanted to find out all the sites you own (for legitimate or illegitimate purposes), and I already know of one website you own, I could just check for all the sites hosted on the same IP (hit n miss since many ppl use shared hosts) or, for more accurate results, search out all the sites that use your adsense publisher ID.

See Adsspy: Whois data for domains or Reverse IP Lookup - Find Other Web Sites Hosted on a Web Server for the tools I mentioned. Also: http://spyonweb.com/

Couldn't this also leave you open to security threats? If someone can look up everything you're involved with, they might be able to hack in and do some damage. It seems to me like the same thing as having the same password for every single account. All it takes is one password and everything you have could be compromised. Can you make separate passwords for everything under the same account?

I agree with what everyone else said. Also, what if one day your host crashes or discontinue a service? You would have to find a new one without much else you can do. I always say this to myself: do not put all your eggs in one basket.
