He's 5 years old and hasn't gotten the whole toy gender difference yet. If it's cool, then he wants it. My husband and I don't have a problem with the dollhouse per se. For example we got him a kitchen a few years ago which is a hot item for most 3 year olds regardless of gender. (We had a bitch of a time trying to find a kitchen that wasn't Purple or pink , don't even get me started on that soap box :angrysoapbox_sml:)

But I'm hesitating with the dollhouse. I'm not sure why exactly except that I think it has to do with maybe how other little boys might react? Actually I'm sure that other 5 year old boys would want to play with it too. I don't know, am I terribly silly for even worrying about it?

BTW I'm looking at something pretty neutral like this: Willow Dollhouse Kit : Hobbies & Toys from Overstock.com

oh no no dollhouse for guys please..take him to the store and show him "cooler" things please!! i beg you! :D

Hmpf.. Never was one for the dolls myself, but yes, this is WAAAAAYY too early to worry about anything gender or even sexuality related.

Way too early.

You'll see him playing with his GI Joes in the dollhouse. You are right, kids don't really make a difference.

pfft.
you go, turbo.

You have no idea how many times I've wanted to rip the face off the pimply faced teenager at the mcdonalds drivetrhough who asks if the happy meal is for a girl or a boy! Girls get stupid toys, boys get racecars. :)

Anyway, both my daughters loved one very similar (though I recall cheaper) to this one
Leaps and Bounds Kids - It's 2 Cute Dollhouse

I did go to the dollhouse store (for the older daughter) and buy an actual dollhouse and then spent the two weeks before Christmas painting, adding windows, gluing on a roof, et cetera. She liked it but it got wrecked. :P

u sure buddy? :)

ON that note, GI Joes, He-MAn figures and the accompanying dollhouses ..err.. MANLY CASTLES are really just dolls for boys.

Well here's the kicker that I CONVENIENTLY left out previously, he wants the dollhouse mostly because he wants to decorate. So building one, or getting a garage, or even the castle grayskull is out. (Unless skelator comes with matching skull drapes)

@lazyleo

YES.

Read any book on developmental psychology.

Hey I like it! Very neutral! I'll see if he digs it.

Jesus F... Christ in a wheelchair...

All these Gender Stereotypes or Hetero/Metro/Homosexual fears are yours alone. The kids don't care.

Why is it that every girl who wants a racecar gets applauded, but boys who want a barbie doll get hit with homophobia?

I'm with you emp but the thing a parent will ALWAYS be concerned about is how the other kids are going to treat him. Kids are so cruel (so are adults for that matter) and you just want to shield them a much a possible.

But I could care less about his sexuality. And I certainly don't think a dollhouse has anything to do with it.

Get him a dollhouse that transforms into nuclear missle silo. or place a few chuck norris action figures as the dollhouse guests.

Damn, I want one of those.

"Hi there, do you want a cup of tea?"
"Yes BArbie, sure, is Ken around?"
"Oh, he just stepped out to launch some missiles... world domination is in our grasp! <MUahahahaha>"

I don't applaud the girls when they want the racecars, if that's what you mean, emp. I actually have to ask the kid at McD's what the different toys are and then ask the kid (actually the 3 year old) which she prefers. (Sigh, the 10 year old is eating big macs, or as I call them "unhappy meals" )

My kids can have whatever floats their boat. Gender issues aren't an issue here. :)

Hmmm, decorate in what way? If he wants to smash down walls, dawb pain everywhere and generally get filthy then he's totally straight....but if he means like, interior design, choosing 'drapes' as you call them, matching lamps, colour coordination etc then DANGER DANGER!:female:

Nah, in all seriousness it doesn't matter in the slightest.

They're called LEGOs. Just get him a ton of basic building parts. They're the universal toy, and furthermore they're great for encouraging him to use his imagination.

I really don't like the fact that so many toys already have the 'activity' or purpose defined in the toy. Lego's let everyone decide what they want to play with, they're good for groups, and they're pretty universal, so you can keep buying Legos and they all go with each other.

Hell, I'm 26 and I still play with Legos every chance I get! :)

+1 for LEGO

Legos are great. The ultimate geek toy.
