First time BitTorrent user. I successfully downloaded a 695 MB file,
(which took approx 4 hrs), so now I am a "seeder". I am still connected, and I have 11 connections, but I have only uploaded 102 MB. At this rate, it will take at least 24 hrs to reach the 'golden rule' of 1:1 ratio (you torrent users will know what I am talking about). My question is, should I continue to seed until I have uploaded 695 MB? What if my computer is dragging and I need to reboot? Will I be blocked as a leecher?

Always seed 1:1 or higher.

If you need to reboot, go ahead. You can continue seeding once you've rebooted.

It depends, if it is tracking your sharing ratio with a username or by ip, then you should stay on. If it's a public torrent from mininova.. then you don't have to, but it's polite.

yeah, I wanna do the right thing, so I'll make sure I get at least 1:1. I just wanted to be sure if I rebooted, I could resume the seed. Sounds like that's no problem. thx for the replies.

You can seed whenever you want if even at all when youre on public domain. Even now I'll seed random ass old files for the hell of it just the be nice sometimes.

seed it and forget about it. If you got some crappy computer that drags because you're uploading, don't blame the community. More than likely you need to adjust your port settings or configure your firewall in a manner that wil let you seed better.

Don't watch your seed and don't watch your downloads. Let them run
2x's and 3x's over. Reduce your seeding torrent window to your status bar and get busy doing something else. Next thing you know...voila you've seeded 3x's over.

The only reason to not properly seed is metered bandwidth. More seed = more rep = more invites to exclusive pools with beter stuff and faster DL's.

24 hours for 695MB? Try 2 weeks for 3GB with a mere handful of people in the swarm...

PS: In some communities 1:1 is still considered being a leech. 2:1 and 3:1 you're good. Constantly seed 6:1 and better you'll be getting invites. If you don't get invites you can ask for invites and show your value by your ratio.

Mind I ask what client are you using?

Holy shit. That's amazing.

This is great info......I appreciate that. I definitely have a lot of reading to do.....like invites...how exactly does one get invited? If they only know your IP, what is the method of communication?

I believe I am running the original BitTorrent client. Just an hour ago I learned I could adjust my upload speed on the fly...so I am quite the torrent tard but at least I am almost at 1:1 already. So I am off to bed and seed overnight...

Once you go Rapidshare, you never go back. Seriously, you'll never feel guilty again. Basically you can download whatever has been uploaded to RS servers. So you don't have to worry about how seeders/leechers there are available. If the server is up and the file is available, then you can download it at your top connection speed.

Jeff, in private forums, people will post Rapidshare links. They'll usually appear about the time that the torrents do, and then you download it and don't worry about sharing since you don't have to.

One word: usenet.

You can download at the full capability of your connection off of usenet and you don't have to upload anything. And nobody cares.

Bit torrent is still a hassle every time I try to use it.

Seconded for Usenet. Newshosting + Newzbin is an unstoppable combination for finding *just* about anything you want...and torrents can fill in the rest.
