I decided to take a last minute trip to Europe, I'm leaving on Tuesday. The first place I'll be staying at is the Netherlands.

Part of the requirements to enter without a visa is that I must have a hotel booked for the duration of my stay OR a letter of invitation from the municipality of the people I'll be staying with.

Now, I'm thinking of booking via airbnb.com or some other similar site where I'm renting from an individual.

Does this count as a hotel? I obviously can't get a letter of invitation fast enough for my trip. I'd call the embassy here, but they are closed until Monday, which is too late, I want to make my reservation this weekend.

I tried calling the Consulate in Honolulu, since it is still Friday afternoon there, but the woman didn't know what to tell me; it seems not many people use this type of service...

Anyways, if anyone happens to have experience on this, I'd highly appreciate any advice (I'm assuming if anyone would it would be other geeks like me who are early adopters of technological changes). Right now, it seems I'll just be booking a regular hotel room tomorrow.

Also, any advice on things to do in amsterdam and paris (two confirmed destinations) is highly appreciated.

Went there this summer. Customs agent asked me where I was staying. I gave him the name of my hotel and was waved through. Didn't even know about this rule until now.

Errrmmm, no, I'm living in latin america and traveling on a latin american passport...

.... Yeah, I forgot the whole 'everyone gets treated differently' thing...

I haven't been there, but I checked their embasy entry requirements and it said that I needed that proof. It could be I won't need it though as many rules are not enforced (govs in general)

Any reason why you just feel like getting up and going? Last few days I felt like just moving to Colorado this summer. Nothing intense like your doing but I feel the need to just get up and move out there for a couple months. I can't explain it.

I always wanted to go to Netherlands and New Zealand though. For some reason I view those two countries as nice people, chill, and no problems.

I would definitely have that proof ready if on a Latin American passport.

Before my wife was a U.S. citizen she had to get an invitation letter, copies of our bank statements and some other random stuff, then get approved for a visa ahead of time to enter the Netherlands.

If airbnb provides some sort of printable receipt showing the address, the dates that you booked, and that you paid, it would probably be accepted the same as a hotel reservation.

Life is short and I've always wanted to go. I can afford it, hell I just gave the US gov way more than it will cost to go.

I finished a few contracts, I'm about to start a couple of new projects, so before I do, I need to get away and blow some steam.

I was there a few months back and had no clue that law even existed, I entered on train though, so I didn't even have to show my passport.

you were entering from within the EU. OP is entering from Latin America. Do you see the difference?

Good stuff. Please do tell about the good and bad of Netherlands, would love to go there one day.
