This is ip addresses not domain names. And its been a know problem for like a decade now, as scottdaman said, hence ipv6. The problem is people don't NEED to switch yet thanks to NAT and most are trying to avoid it. Plus you have organisations like MIT which have way way way too many addresses assigned to them which could be reassigned first. China is making a big push for IPv6 though so hopefully that will help move things forward.

IPv6 allows for 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 addresses so we won't run out of those anytime soon. :)
 
Domain investing and affiliate marketing is dead. IP address squatting is the new internet gold mine.

What he said. It's a little harder to get a class C or even a dedicated IP now days than it was back in say 98/99.
