New WordPress Site How Do I Develop It, Test It, Then Go Live?

Quick question.

I want to put together a WordPress site to replace an existing site. The existing site is hundreds of pages and is in HTML. I want to create the entire new site, test it, and then make it live. This way if I take a week to complete everything it will not affect the existing site.

I know I can do this locally but I want the site accessible to other collaborators "on-line" - they should be able to access the site, add posts, add pictures, etc - all before it is live.

This part where I need collaboration online means I cannot do the site locally, I need to have it online while under development. (as far as I understand)

1. Should I put it on a different domain, or sub-domain of the current site and then develop it that way. Once finished just follow the WP directions to move the site?
2. Which is easier to move. From a sub domain or from a different domain?
3. I s there an easier way?
4. Any suggestion on someone I can pay to do the change once I am ready. I would rather pay than screw up the transition.

Any help would be appreciated - thanks.

Hey,
I do my testing, if at all, on a subdomain.
Its just as easy to move from one domain to another as it is fron a subdomain.
No suggestions, but its simple and a good learning experience. Just make sure you back up the old site, juat in case you shitcan the new obe.

Satisfied with Dossey02 , create a site on subdomain , then test it and later if its successfull transfer it on main root domain , and dont forget to backup everything before making changes .

Hi, I have same problem with you,,thanks for the thread and the answer,,,I got it...

If you do that, you'll have DB issues, as the site address is stored/used in the DB, so it'll crash if you don't transfer the DB and update the information stored there.

That is what I was thinking. I chose to do it on a sub-domain and I am working on it now

When I am done I will probably hire someone to move it - just so I do not screw it up. I have read 5 different ways to move the site - but probably should leave it up to an expert on this one.
