The game drew an average viewership of 27.6 million, making it the most-watched hockey broadcast since the U.S. team beat Finland to win gold at 1980 Olympics. That game drew 32.8 million fans and came on the heels of the historic U.S. win against the U.S.S.R. in the "Miracle on Ice" game.

It was also the most-watched television broadcast ever in Canadian history, with an average audience of 16.6 million viewers. Nearly half of the Canadian population watched the entire game on average, while 80 percent of Canadians watched some part of the game (26.5 million). The game aired live on nine television networks in eight languages via Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium.

..

The number of fans watching the gold-medal game eclipsed a number of other major sports events this season, including the 2010 Rose Bowl (24.0 million), the 2009 World Series (22.8 million for Game 4, the most-watched game), the 2009 NCAA men's basketball championship game (17.6 million), the 2009 NBA Finals (16.0 million for Game 4, the most-watched game) and the 2010 Daytona 500 (16.0 million).

The only professional sports game in the USA that had more people watching was the Superbowl...but no one cares about hockey.

Of course the ratings were high - half of Canada watched that shit. We know, we get it - you guys love you some hockey.

lmao, a lot more than half watched some part of it (article says 80% but that seems too low).

I honestly don't know one person who didn't watch the game. Which could be sad, or pretty cool depending on the way you look at it I suppose...

Like 15 minutes after Sid scored the winning goal there was a group about him scoring with 100,000 members.

Hockey... That's the sport with lots of beer and a moose on the ice right?

and beavers too

This morning, according to ESPN, they said over 1/2 watched the whole game, and upwards of 80% watched at least some part of it..at least for Canada.

Even for the US, we had a pretty strong viewership can't remember the exact amount though.

Nearly 17 million people from Canada watched it, which means around 10 million from the U.S. watched it. And for those of you's that need a math lesson, that around 3% of the U.S. - And a majority of us only tuned in because we wanted to see Canada throw a fit when we took your only resource for entertainment. YES we still think that hockey sucks arse.

Yet another douche that can't just keep his fuckwit comments to himself and who doesn't know what the fuck he is talking about.

NBC has widely reported the viewership in the US was on average 27.6 million and peaked out at 34.8 million and surpassed all of the following recent events for TV viewership...

All of those events occur once per year, as opposed to the winter Olympics which occur every four years, therefore you should divide that number by 4 to accurately reflect the time value coordinate variable.

It doesn't matter - my point is still made - that's still less than 10% of the U.S. and a majority of those are Canadians that live on border cities, because they need our health care. If you go anywhere 100 miles past the Canadian border, hockey is like a foreign language. I watched it because of the rivalry on this forum, but I honestly don't personally know anyone near me that watched the game or even knew there was a U.S./Canada game.

I called my brother to see if he was watching it, and honestly his reaction was "Did you forget to wear your helmet on the shortbus home again?". LOL

You made no point. You were shot down in flames. Quit trying to claim otherwise.

WTF? Canadians that live on border cities? You've got to be kidding me.

24 teams (including 3 in California and 2 in Florida, just slightly more than 100 miles from the border) and annual live attendance that surpasses the NFL by about 4 million and which is almost exactly on par with the NBA would suggest you don't know what you are talking about. Just another loud mouth Yank that thinks no one cares about hockey.

Why is everyone so pussy hurt?

Very few people outside of the US like football, very few people outside of Canada and some Eastern European countries like Hockey (in terms of percentage of population.)

Different strokes for different folks.

Over the last 10 years, live attendance of hockey surpassed the NFL by nearly 50 million. When you take relatives of Sarah Palin out, it's still at least 800K.

what the hell is your problem. Your country won gold yet you still look for reasons to bitch because people say hockey isn't the most popular sport in america. You are like that kid who always wanted to be good at something and finally you got good and beat every kid in class to win first place but nobody cared because the game you beat everyone at was Chinese checkers or something nobody cares about.

God you canadians are pathetic with your gloating. Some americans might give a shit for a couple days or weeks but after that nobody cares anymore. Its the winter olympics and hockey for fuck sakes its not like you won the world cup or something.

Well, if that's the only hockey game you ever watched in your life, I wouldn't watch another one. That was the best game you'll ever see. Three goals came off deflections (ever try to tip a puck with your stuff as it whizzes by at 80 miles per hour)? Tying goal scored with 24 seconds left. Doesn't get any better.

Anytime you have a game where the very best in the world are competing at the highest level that they can perform at, you should try to appreciate it. Like when Diego Maradona won the World Cup for Argentina in 1986. I don't care at all about soccer but I still remember him playing.

That was a fantastic game - as much as I hated to see the US lose Canada had a solid win.

Next time I'm in San Jose I'm going to get my Jersey signed by the whole crew hopefully :)

LOL - You've obviously never been to the United States have you?

Hockey has over 1200 games per season, which brings the average per game attendance down to around 16,000. Whereas the NFL has 256 games and the average attendance is around 70,000. So if you were comparing actual popularity, you'd have to stretch the NFL attendance out to 1200 games like hockey has. Then you'd realize that the NFL annihilates hockey in every way imaginable here in the U.S.

So don't come in here w/ your lame statistics. I live here, and know what we watch.
