Been away for a while - had a car accident(car is now on junkyard, i almost ended on graveyard), designed few websites for some clients and did some half time jobs. Most of the money will be spent on things I need, but I decided to put aside 200$ and finally start IM.

This thread will be my journal, where I'll post my ramblings and questions about the things that aren't very clear to me, so hopefully someone more experienced will point me in the right direction.

After thinking what exactly to do, I decided to join CJ.
I registered a long time ago, but never earned a penny.
Last night I got approved from one advertiser and I now I'm doing some research.

Since I know a lot about fitness, I decided to start with that niche, but I'm aiming for a specific terms, not the plain old "fat loss" or "6 pack abs" keywords.

So this is my first question:
What number of monthly searches (according to google keyword tool) is worth of trying to try with that specific keyword?

For example, I have a three word keyword which has 14,800 monthly searches. Google returns 1,310,000 results for that keyword, and 88,300 results when put in quotes.
According to google insights, average score is 71.
Most of the searches come from USA, Canada, UK.

14800/30 days = 493 searches daily for that keyword

Is this ok, or is it too much(too competitive) or number of searches is small so I should expect low conversions?

If this is ok, my next step will be buying mykeyword.info
Main reason is because .com is already taken, but it's not appearing anywhere close top results.
And I'm not skeptic about .info domains because I own .info domain which ranks amazing - #1 position in google among 47,500,000 results. So I don't see how google hates Info domains :)

I did reasearch for 6 three word keywords last night, and statistics are close to the keyword I described above. I plan to start with 3 domains and see where this takes me.

I would say that ~15,000 monthly searches is the perfect place to start. When I first got started I made the mistake of targeting insanely specific long tail keywords and the results were discouraging. As a rule of thumb, I don't actively target keywords that get less than 6,000 searches per month.

Assume that, on average, 50 percent of the people searching for that keyword will click on the website in the number one position. For your keyword phrase, that equates to ~250 visitors per day for the website ranked number one.

The conversion rate really depends on the keyword, your offer, and how well you pre-sell on your site. If you're in the fitness niche and slinging berries or some other sort of rebill, the offer is most likely paying somewhere ~$35. With 2 percent of your 250 visitors per day converting, you'd be pulling ~$175/day. A 6 percent conversion rate would get you ~$525/day. It all depends on whether or not your keyword converts, and how well you optimize your site for clicks and conversions. Use common sense and your best judgement to determine whether the keyword will convert.

When looking at the competition, I wouldn't put too much thought into how many results are coming up with and without quotes. Instead, download SEO for Firefox and pick apart the sites ranking in the top 3. Are they highly authoritative sites? What's their domain age? How many backlinks do they have? How strong are their backlinks? Look at their onsite optimization and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. These are the sites you need to beat out. Anything less than a position in the top 3 and you'll be enjoying 20 visitors/day.

Don't expect to get rich from your first SEO project. Getting started, SEO is all about learning by doing, patience, and dedication. After you've got your keywords researched and selected, don't over think things. Get a site up, improve it as you go, and optimize it as you gain a better understanding of optimization (both for sales and ranks).

I downloaded tools and now I'm doing some research. #1 site has PR4 and it's 8yo. It only gets 0,8% of visits for my keyword so I think I stand a chance.
#2 Has PR1, 8yo, but since it's portal it only has one article containing my keyword.
Domain age could be the problem, but we'll see!

I thought I had a hot 3 word Domain with 6k monthly searches turn its 300 monthly searches always double check that factor
