I've basically searched everywhere but was unable to find an answer, so forgive me if this has already been answered on this forum.

I'm planning to target low competition niches, and since I don't have an abundace of $$$ to invest, I was thinking of consolidating all the niches under one domain even though the niches don't particularly relate to one another. My question is would I get penalized by the big "G" if I were to do this? Part of me says no because About.com is doing exactly that but I'm not sure if they are doing something different that I am not aware of.

I don't plan to use subdomains rather just put them in a folder under the main domain. For example www.domain.com/niche1... www.domain.com/niche2... www.domain.com/niche3 ect... I would install wordpress in each folder acting as a "mini site" under the main domain, I don't plan on linking any of them, but since they are under the same domain wouldn't they somehow already be linked, thus comes my concern for crosslinking, something I have a vague idea about. Sorry for the long winded post, can anyone ease my thoughts? Thanks in advance, John.

Sounds fine

I've done exactly that on one domain and the results are fine.
Bear in mind that if one minisite got banned you would lose all of them.
I think separate domains is considered better for branding reasons (ie on the visitor side), rather than technical reasons

This also depends on how far apart your niches are.
If, (just an example), niche1,2,3.. would all report about aspects of baseball, baseballnicheblog.com/niche1,2,3 might just do fine.

If they are far apart, you might consider splitting them into their own domain, with a distinctive and related name. The domain name is still part of the ranking algorithms, after all.

Since I don't really have a specific niche I want to target I'm considering using a domain name that doesn't pertain to a anything. I guess leadegroot answered my question, since this endeavor is really more a test then anything I don't want to invest too much money the first time around. Again thanks for the help.
