Obama's 30 minute infommercial

This was a retarded infomercial and I felt like Obama shot himself in the foot.

Yeah, the economy isn't great. We get that. We realize Obama is going to squeeze the nipples of the "bad economy problem" right into the White House because for some reason people think he and his nonexistent resume are better equipped to reform and kick some asses in DC than his opponent. Proof please.

The families he featured (all from battleground states), really don't represent the majority of Americans or their problems. I live in a middle-class community, and yeah, people whine about gas prices, but I don't know anyone not buying eggs or a gallon of milk because they've gone up a couple cents in a few years. People are still buying plasma TV's. People are still going to DisneyWorld. High school girls are still walking around in their $180 designer jeans with their $600 Coach bags.

The mom living paycheck-to-paycheck in Obama's video complained about her expenses, but obviously had no problem shelling out $400 for one of those leather high school Varsity jackets for her young daughter.

Please. This Obama fad (and that's all it is, a fad. Nothing more, nothing less) is biggest facade I've ever seen.

Speaking of facades:

it was well done and to call it an infomercial undermines how well crafted and powerful this message was and how effectively it was delivered. i was concerned that it was going to be a total misstep and come off as arrogant/elitist/etc - but it was extremely well done and executed. i read a quote where it was suggested that not until someone tries this in the future and fails will we really appreciate what was accomplished last night.

edit: the infomercial remark isn't at the op but the right wing talking heads / pundits who are pushing this meme.

that was some good propaganda. i used to think he's just another candidate, but something about him makes me feel like he really wants to get shit done.

I'll keep my fingers crossed. I didnt want Obama or Mccain. But Obama has such an edge, truly a master at his game.

Ditto that, and I think that even if you don't support the guy he should get points for the effective campaign he has run and the stealth get-out-the-vote ground game they're running.

Hillary Clinton's operation fell apart largely because her campaign was inefficient and fiscally wasteful. McCain's is another poorly run campaign, and a political campaign can be a preview into the candidate's judgment and executive skills.

Sarah Palin as the running mate looked like a brilliant choice, when in fact it was his first major decision and he showed poor judgment. Obama will be surrounded by good people when he's president, and not cronies. He chose well with Biden.

As a non-partisan observer (I always preface with that)...

Obama's campaign will spur a major transformation in the way future campaigns are managed. His ability to raise cash has been integral to his competitiveness. 30-minutes of prime time on multiple networks ain't cheap, obviously. Frankly, McCain doesn't have the war chest to match the time slot.

I was reading an article a few months ago in The Atlantic that profiled the Silicon Valley group that was tapped to design his money campaign. It was absolutely riveting. A lot of folks think Obama has attracted $660+ million based upon his character, position, message, etc. In fact, the architecture of the campaign soliciting for cash is brilliant.

Hillary's campaign was doomed for a few reasons. First, they put her on stage talking about policy (far less-compelling than a message about change). Second, the people who surrounded her were fighting like cats and dogs. There was little direction and even less cooperation among the players. The Atlantic acquired hundreds of emails and documents (and they posted them on their website) that showed the group imploding early.

Obama's campaign has been managed flawlessly. I'm not referring to the skeletons (real or perceived) in his closet. I'm referring to the fact that it's seamless. There are no leaks. It was the same with Dubya. Near-absolute silence from the troops.

McCain's campaign has recently developed leaks with his aides attacking Palin for going off the reservation. I'm not convinced it's indicative of his executive skills. After all, it's difficult to trade key players (in this case, his aides) in mid-season. Sometimes, it's difficult to even bench them for the remainder of the season.

Incidentally, I missed (avoided?) the 30-minute spot by Obama. Too much rhetoric for my taste. That said, he has been very effective at delivering a message that the public responds to. As pedestrian as that message can sound, people seem to gravitate toward it in times of distress.

It's a great strategy.

I missed the TV spot, since I was watching some show about McCain on ABC...

Call it what you like (it was cheezy a bit) one reason he will win is because of the online marketing strategy. Did you hear in the end where he said "go to BarackObama.com" and sign up for blah blah blah??

Their mailing list is the envy of every politician in America if not the world. He just created this online calculator where you can go and compare tax policies another great tool to draw people in...

I mean how effing brilliant is that? The problem here is a generational one. His camp knows the power of the web, McCain's camp doesn't/didn't. He could have won this election with a better online marketing strategy (in part) - a unified message where all media channels are pushing the exact same message over and over again.

You can tell it was a bit rehearsed because when Clinton came on a little while later, he specifically said "go vote then go email your friends and encourage them to vote".

I read that with their database of what could be 10+ million email addreses (plus phone numbers for mobile marketing) at any one time they can blast a message to millions of people.

All I want to know is the people behind what they have done - their playbook will be studied for years to come.

Also, I've noticed how they make the left hand shake the right hand where google is concerned (i.e they often match the organic ranking message they are pushing with PPC ads - just like they "tied up" the airwaves last night.....)

I wish someone would do a study on this. I vaguely remember reading NikkyCake's blog where he compared Obama's internet strategy with Clinton's I think during the primary......

McCain is an idiot, he can't even come up with an argument of why he should be president, all he can do is appeal to peoples self-interest by distorting Obama's tax plan and linking him to terrorists. He's got no message.

On the other hand, Obama has proven himself in a lot of ways by now. If he can get an operation like that running for his campaign, it does at the very least say something about how the quality of his operations will be as a president (regardless of whether you agree with his policies or not)...

I think you're on the money there, Riddarhusetgal.
Love or hate Obama, as marketers, we should be paying attention to how he did things. I'm amazed at how nearly every negative that's been thrown at the guy has managed to go through the spincycle and come up looking like a positive (with the one exception of Ayers).
Particularly the part about understanding the generation. Whilst the 18-25 demographic may be quite small in terms of absolute numbers, getting them to vote in the past has always been difficult, and it looks like he's managed to tap into that.
In effect, he's gotten a message out to a market segment that's normally not interested in the product at all, changed the image of it, and sold it inside a new package.
Part of that has to do with simply the way in which he's been gathering campaign funds. He's been making it very inclusive (soooo web2.0, dahhhling) by getting thousands of small donations, so people feel like they are a part of the campaign, that they have a stake in it... As opposed to the traditional method of getting a few dozen BIG financiers, that are usually connected to big business interests.

The whole thing is just fascinating, particularly from the outside.

Well, if you guys want a bit of humour about the whole thing, coming from an international perspective, I've been laughing my arse off with The Race Race, by the guys behind The Chaser (They're our local Stewart/Colbert smush up team).
They're a little more informed than the average pundit, but substantially larger smartarses about it.
