Obsession = success?

I was thinking today about some of the marathon coding sessions both Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg went through when they created their “empire”. They aren’t the only people who have turned an obsession into a billion dollar business but it got me thinking, does obsession = success?

I’ve been hacking away at SEO for around 2 years now at maybe an hour or two a day. I’m doing good but I know I could be doing so much better. I suppose part of the issue is the nature of seo and how it appears to me to more suited to a daily slower “bit a a time” thing than the week long coding sessions some of the people i admire went through. Sometimes you gotta wait to see if what you’re doing works right? Also after days coding you can clearly see the % of your software that’s done and ultimately at the end something that works.

I think I am obsessed with seo and IM in general in my own way because I think about it so much. However the practicalities of the process don’t seem to lend themselves to the weeks, months long – “locked in my room with a computer” obsessions that I read about from other people. Am I comparing like for like?

totally depends on how you do it. if you're looking at seo more like managing projects rather than writing articles and posting blog comments then yes, you can see improvements more often because chances are at least one of your projects is moving up.

oh and and witnessing how all the work you've been managing comes together in one epic masterpiece can be pretty motivating, too.

You might be obsessed but youre being lazy obsessed. Thinking about something all the time can be obsession but if you arent doing anything about it then you are wasting any good that can come from that obsession.

You're not gonna build an empire working one or two hours a day bro.

This.

Obsessed means eating, living, and breathing what you do. It's the first thing on your mind when you wake up, the last thing on your mind when you go to bed, and what you dream of for most of the night.

Obsession, especially what you're talking about (assuming you're talking about obession with money or building an 'empire') is in essence a psychopathic behavior. A lot of the time even if you do manage to attain the success you're seeking, if you're actually "obsessed" you will still be miserable. It's best to find inner peace and your place in the world instead of emulating someone like Zuckerberg; didn't you watch the movie? He essentially did it because he got dumped by a girl and everyone else thought he was a loser. And even as a billionaire and owner of one of the most successful websites in the world he still as depressed as he was when he was a Harvard undergrad. Now I read about Zuck donating to charity and all that jazz, probably to compensate for all the shady shit he's done in his life.

Just my .02.

Depends on what your goals are.

If you want to get rich, it's best to be obsessed with making money - something which many people forget strangely enough.

I could never be at peace with the fact that I have 'a place' in the world.

Obsession NOT equal to Success.

However, obsession is needed to be successful...

Or I should say it increases your chance to be successful...

Just think about when you obsessed with a girl, it pretty much increases your chance to be with her.

:P

> Just think about when you obsessed with a girl, it pretty much increases

Or get arrested.

Hey, look at that... the analogy to IM holds up under further scrutiny.

A billion dollars later and he still can't get high quality, playboy tier pussy - so he settled for this (Notice the man chin on his Asian girl coupled with ballooning thighs):

lol, is that smirnoff?

On the thread topic though - you've got to have a natural passion for whatever it is you're doing.

Every time I start a new project, which for me is mostly php/mysql based sites - I'll spend 12+ hours per day in front of my computer doing nothing but coding. It's eat, sleep, and code. And workout, I still fit in a workout. And I'm a college student so I have to go to fucking class too. At least I'm graduating in may.

But anyways, the point is that I never have to force myself to do those "marathon" coding sessions. I don't even notice the time go by.

It's not something you can force yourself to do - you've either got it or you don't.
