So, now I'd like to start doing this officially. As far as rates and length go, I'm keeping a few things in mind as I go about doing this. There are two categories that I want to have for projects: primary topics and secondary topics.
PRIMARY TOPICS - $.03/word
This is where I'd like the bulk of my work to be. These are the issues that interest me the most and that I can generally write about comfortably. If it's something that requires some research, I'll put the time in and research as long as necessary to make the final product a high-quality one.
US Politics
World Politics & History
International Relations (especially the Middle East)
Technology
Gaming
MMA
Nutrition & Alternative Medicine
The reason I bolded the first three is that I am an international relations student, and so I have a decent working knowledge of these, as well as the drive and resources to learn whatever I don't know yet. The other four are interests of mine but nothing that I have a formal background with, though I've written game reviews for years and have some firsthand experience with MMA (jiu-jitsu anyway) and alternative medicine.
As far as these topics are concerned, longer is better. When I'm writing about something that interests me, conforming to a 500 word cap is a nightmare. The political stuff in particular is very hard to limit in that manner. In other words, these are better suited to 1.5-2k word articles (even longer is fine with me) on a few important topics than a dozen 500-word articles. I'm starting out at $.03/word, as depending on the subject, these can take a lot of time to research.
SECONDARY TOPICS - $.02/word
Random stuff that people need articles written about.
I'll take pretty much anything here except adult/ethically questionable subjects and editorializing (unless you want me to write my own honest opinion). I don't care about the length on these and as they seem simple enough to do, I'll start at $.02 per word. My aim, however, is to work on these only when I don't have primary topics to work on.
RE-WRITES - $.015/word
Pretty self-explanatory. No research involved, but a good re-write can take some careful wording and thought.
PROOFREADING - $.01/word
I've done this before, though at that time I was getting paid by the hour and not by the word. Still, I think this is a decent rate to start at.
As for payment, I'd like to do PayPal, and am fine with people waiting to get the product and paying after, as long as it's to their satisfaction. If you're getting into massive (10k etc) orders, which I don't mind for the primary topics at all, then we can work out some kind of "half now, half later" sort of deal. Still, my main concern is always making sure that people are happy with what I'm providing.
