I am honestly astound at this site.
 


it's monetized via a $300k book deal with random house publishing.

built on a whim, eventually used as a platform to build user-generated content into a book. similar to the creation of 'what would bill hicks say' by ben mack, without any real marketing muscle behind it.

was promoted by true word of mouth, shock value, and hats white people like. featured on NPR within two months of its launch, erupted onto several blogs near you within four months, and now has mainstream news sources such as the LA times promoting the book which has been available since july 1st.

yep. one of those 'damn, i shoulda done that' ideas.

And then to suggest this could be accomplished with some 'blackhat methods' was the kicker, LOL.

from what i gathered from the first page and 3 minutes of google, it looked like the site was a contributor-generated bombshell that paid off pretty big. diggin deeper it seems that it was a one-man show until he opened it up to fill the book. you're right on.

without seeing the whole deal, 'damn, i shoulda done that' was a condensed version of 'damn, i shoulda thought up a controversially entertaining topic with an awesomely simple and brandable domain, then either use my statistically nonexistent writing-well skills to post witty and well-written writings, or pay people who write well to write witty and well-written writings, or sift through user-submitted junk and post the wittiest well-written writings, or pay someone to sift through user-submitted junk and post the wittiest well-written writings.'

feels good to elaborate though. this is actionable information, no doubt.

try replacing blackpeople with something a bit more offensive and you'll find it's up for grabs not so surprisingly enough.....

Google Adwords = Platform for displaying ads and buying clicks on either searches (google and google network) OR google content network (any website with adsense).

Google Adsense = Platform for monetizing your website. Get paid for impressions and clicks.


You meant to say that the website was monetized by Google Adsense.
