A few of you may find this article interesting...

Executioner: Death by firing squad is '100 percent justice' - CNN.com

Apparently, Utah may be bringing the firing squad back this month.

The first half of the linked piece describes the mechanics of the process. That's the interesting part (to me, at least). The second half is a bunch of fluff.

I'm not trying to spark a debate about capital punishment. But I know one or two of you might enjoy knowing the details behind a firing squad.

I like this. A couple of bullets are a lot cheaper than the methods we use now. There needs to be some reform in the system as well. A lot of death row inmates are on death row for 10 - 20 years or more before they are finally put down. It pisses me off that convicted killers are set up in prison at the tax payers expense for all of these years, with better medical and dental health care than the average law abiding citizen gets.

They should get 1-2 years max for an appeal. Period. Then take them out back and shoot them.

I'm not sure we need firing squads, but why make it so complicated. Lethal injection? Just use the same pink juice they give dogs & cats at the vet. It's cheap and quick.

Always surprises me how ruthless Americans are.

No government should be in the business of killing their own citizens.

There are some pretty brutal fuckers that kill innocent people. Here in San Diego there was just such a douche bag that raped and killed some high school girls. One was just out for a jog and he grabbed her, raped her and killed her. He took not only her life, but ruined the lives of her family. He made a deal with the prosecutor to give up the location of another missing girl that he killed in exchange for life in prison, rather than the death penalty. This fucker should be shot in the head. Murders have no value to society and I, for one, don't like my tax dollars paying their food, shelter, and health care.

All of Nature governs its own citizens. You're an ant and you fuck up... head bitten off by a solider ant. You're a chimp, wander into the wrong territory... you get your head beaten across a rock and eaten by the rival group. You're a dolphin and fuck the wrong lady dolphin... the pod collaboratively fucks you up.

Same in humans. Always have done. Always will. It's not healthy to the propagation of our bloodlines to let paedophiles and axe-murders live across the street.

Bullets, axes, bombs. elephant stompings...I don't care how they do it. Just stick it on the TV to scare the shit out of the masses. They'd think twice before doing harm unto others if you knew there was a possibility of ending up on 'America's Funniest Executions'.

Yep, I don't disagree he deserves to die. But on principle, I just don't think the government should wield that much power.

Research has shown that murderers are not thinking about possible consequences when they act...

If it wasn't the government, it would be a non "government" group of folks who agree that certain offenders should be put to death and then finding a way to do it. How is that any different? What other alternative could there be?

Many countries do not use the death penalty and society has refrained from forming death squads.

Research can be made to show that your intelligent or that I don't have an overinflated sense of self worth. Research doesn't mean shit. Scaring the shit out of a lot of people to not kill/rape/maim/steal is more useful than NOT scaring them to not kill/rape/maim/steal.

Criminals are let off far too lightly these days. Just remember what penalties have been in operation in the past...

Severe historical penalties include breaking wheel, boiling to death, flaying, slow slicing, disembowelment, crucifixion, impalement, crushing (including crushing by elephant), stoning, execution by burning, dismemberment, sawing, decapitation, scaphism, or necklacing.

That brings me back to a good memory in my History class where the teacher started talking about stoning, and I asked if it were possible to throw the stones back at the people if I'm getting stoned. And well, the whole class had a laugh, lol.

I didn't claim that it was true. :)

Are you saying the only reason everyone isn't killing each other is because they have been scared by propaganda? Do you need the government to scare you in to knowing what is right and wrong before you act?

I think that capital punishment is barbaric and short sighted.

If you REALLY want to punish the worst of the worst, stick them in solitary confinement for LIFE w/o parole.

Wanting to punish someone is what is barbaric -- killing is practical. :D

I favor a deferred death penalty where they are sentenced to death but are allowed to continue living in prison while they're behavior is good and they are working and providing enough labor to pay for their upkeep and confinement this allows the death penalty to exist as an effective deterant while taking the financial burden off of the tax payers for long term imprisonment with no hope of reform.

Move back to Shari'a Law then.

Why don't we just crucify the convicts publicly as a reminder to all of humanity?

how do you address those who after serving YEARS on death row DNA evidence acquitted?

an acceptable "whoops" because they're likely poor and a minority?

That may be true but the death penalty has proven to be 100% effective with curbing recidivism.

^This. And also gets them the fuck out of our gene pool.

And who's going to pay for all their food?

That would be too much of a mess.
