I've been trying to improve my copywriting lately. It's probably the most frustrating thing for me and thus it's something I put off the most. But there was one thing I did recently that helped out a lot.
I teach guitar lessons part time, and one of my students' dad wanted to get his son a recording device for Christmas. He asked for my help, so I shopped around online for a bit. I looked for something that I would buy myself if I were looking at the time. When I found a good product I sent the student's dad an email. I didn't spend hours thinking of what to write and I didn't endlessly nitpick what I did write. I just explained very clearly which product I recommended and why I thought it was the best. I hardly even thought about it; It was just like talking to a friend.
Turns out he bought that product. I wasn't surprised that he did, but I realized later that my email was basically a sales letter. And the reason it worked was because I was 100% straight up with what I said, I had a good product, and I had the right audience at the right time. So now every time I write copy I try to emulate that same exact situation, and I seem to be making better progress now than I was before. I just pretend that a friend asked me a question and I'm doing my best to respond.
So take from that what you will. It's a pretty simple idea. Just thought I'd try to contribute a little bit.
