So I snagged Lion today. Here is the gist of it: It converts your computer into a giant iPad if you want. That's about it. If you have a trackpad good for you. If you'll have a touch screen good for you. For the rest of us who still prefer to interface with our machine brethren by the almighty keyboard and mouse, you don't get much.

You get some fancy full screen bullshit and they demolished the dashboard with a "launchpad" and a "mission control". Both of which are horrible at this point. Mission control takes over "show me all applications" but very ugly and launchpad is "look at me, i'm an iPad now!".

I'm not complaining. I hope some of the background processes are faster, etc. But the problem is they quit supporting PowerPC applications, which means my Quicken 2007 is now defunct. However, turns out iBank can import quicken data so I'm saved right? Nope, because I had to export my qdfm file as a QIF first. So now I'm fucked.

If I shoot someone a quicken file, can they convert it to QIF so I can import that bitch into iBank? It's not that exciting so don't everyone jump at it. You can see how little money this project has made so far (read: in the negative).

Well, then again, it has all my domains in it as well. I swear the universe conspires against me.

OS X Lion is definitely going to take some getting used to. All of the trackpad commands have changed and it's extremely annoying when I can't change them back to the custom way I had them. Going "back" on browsers used to be a three finger swipe in the direction of back and now all that does is move me to my next screen. Where is the file for the old OS X?

Yeah, and for mice it inverted the scrolling to match sliding papers around on a desktop as if you are using a trackpad. I'm getting used to it already but c'mon. I feel like I'm playing a flight simulator or something.

Windows 8 sounds like it's heading in that direction as well. Should be different to say the least... I'm not a big fan.

So in short... OS X Lion = Vista? I honestly liked the Mac dashboard, it's one of the features I liked about the Mac OS and implemented with my Panel in Linux Mint.

Does Vista do all that? I never used it. It seemed to rip off OS X with the dock and widgets and all that. Gadgets or whatever they chose to call it. EDIT: a quick search shows that Vista was a stepping stone into the touch world, as Lion will be as well... Unless it excites you, its not really worth the upgrade. I see no real upgrade. Just a sideways step towards something I am not excited about until touch screen is done minority report style.

By the way, I think I have a solution. I'm getting Quicken Essentials which was released in 2010 which is a stripped down version of Quicken 2007 and I'll use that to export QIF files, and I'll permanently leave Quicken behind. It's been nothing but a pain for me. Converting from windows to mac with it was such a hassle.

I recently switched back to PC from Mac given the direction Lion was taking; looks like I made the right choice. I'm not a fan of Windows 7 though.. I wish I could continue using XP.

Lol, I meant the strategy of fixing stuff that isn't broke and what they replaced the stuff with doesn't work right - pissing off your customers.

I recently switched back to PC from Mac...

Not sure if seous. I smell troll.

They started trying to pull this shit with Linux also. Gnome 3 sucks donkey dick.

They are going to have to start releasing "developer" versions, because this shit is not made for business.

Here's my strategy with Windows OS's: skip every other one. WinXP you get, Vista you skip, Win7 get, Win8 skip, Win9 get, etc.

Forget Apple.

Might DL it in the next couple days. Id rather put my dick in a bear trap than use windows.

I'm still hanging on with my main desktop. Other desktop and laptop are both 7.

Off topic, sorry OP, but anyone running 7 with two+ monitors know if 7's remote desktop takes over the system's attention when it's maximized on a monitor, so Alt+Tab shows a cycle of the remote machine's tasks, not the local's? Really like this about XP.

Screenshots?

Also, the macbook airs look pretty snazzy. Too bad GIMP is a heaping pile of doo on OSX. Still looking for a laptop/tablet in that 1k range. Think I am going to wait till the end of the year. Will probably do a tablet/netbook combo, but if nothing comes along then I'll probably just get one of the macbook airs.

Last update for anyone searching in the future. Quicken Essentials didn't fix a damn thing. It said it can convert all files unless you are on Lion, then you're once again screwed.

Inverting the scrolling is interesting.. that certainly is going to take some getting used to. The launch pad is AWESOME, I don't see why you don't like it. Before to see all my applications I had to click on the app folder, then click the arrow to show all then scroll through them all in standard folder view. Now I just hit launch pad and swipe to go them them, its going to be a feature I am going to use A LOT.

You can also just go to the system preferences and just change the gesters back to how they were. I just set my page vertical scrolling back the way it was, you can also do the same thing with the 3 finger "back" that another poster talked about. So far I have just been using it for 15mins but I am quite happy already, some of the gesters are quite hard (launch pad) since I have a old mbp with the button at the bottom but it looks like I can just change them in the prefs.

I am sure many of the other features will be awesome once I find them, but so far its well worth the price. Very fun. It doesn't cost a billion dollars like a windows upgrade, for the price you get a lot of new and very cool features.

I also don't think you sould blame Lion for its lack of PowerPC support, I mean really the last PowerPC machine that came out was in 2006, they just put a major nail in the cd/dvd coffin you really think they care about supporting apps built on a 5yr old processor. This is a problem that Quicken has not Apple, your anger should be directed at them instead.

5/5 cheap, fun, upgrade, adds some new features, worth it.

You confooosed me. But I won't be upgrading in a Hurry.

Thats because they are trying a new pricing model. They want people to buy their 3rd party apps through the app store, and take their own cut. The 3rd parties are most likely going to increase their prices to compensate.

you guys know you can change the inverted scrolling and the amount of finger swipes for back and such?

The only thing that is truly "different" is spaces is gone, so you only have horizontal "desktops"...Everything else can be switched back to the way it was previously...And this is definitely an OS designed for laptops more than desktops, as they stress using all the screen space available cause laptops generally have smaller screens, and the track pad features and such.

Ya I was in system preferences trying to fuck with this. I ended up getting it, just had to keep trying options and testing.
