On Saturday, the teen (whose name has not been released) spent 90 minutes standing at a busy intersection with a hand-written sign describing her sins.

their teenager sounds awesome, fuck them.

My dad would just kick my fucking ass like a soccer ball until I'd hide in my room under my bed and plug my ears with my fingers just to make it stop. I'd shut my eyes tight as fuck and imagine myself on a sandy beach. It was worse for my brother. He does whatever the fuck he wants and does not take shit from anyone.

It's no coincidence that these shit stories keep popping up on yahoo.

All you have to do is follow the formula:

1. Make kid hold sign
2. Get news coverage
3. Grab reality TV show appearances
4. Go on Dr. Phil
5. Profit

this is very very common in china. it's called 自我批评

if your wife doesn't obey you you can send her back to her mother, who will send her back to you holding one of these along the road/bus/train to your front door, where she will kneel down while calling you to accept her again.

it really happens here [note; i live in deeply rural areas]

Okay, then why do the article comments make you hate people?

The last thing a self-conscious 13 year old kid who's just been traumatized by the loss of a close family member needs is public shaming on an international level.

Comments...

"Well, we can't beat 'em anymore".

"In my day I got my ass beat until I couldn't sit for a week".

Whatever.

A kids psyche is still developing at that age, it's fragile. Every kid at school is going to ask her about it. It's going to embarrass the shit out of her.

If my parents humiliated me in public I'd probably still hate them today, and I'm 30.

"The Nickells say their daughter has become increasingly disrespectful at home and school since her uncle - Renee’s brother - was killed in Afghanistan in December 2011. She has been unresponsive to other forms of punishment including being grounded."

Maybe she's depressed that a close relative died in a bullshit war that's been going on since she can remember and she's wondering what the fuck is wrong with the world.

I have no idea. But that'd be more common sense than most adults have these days. I'd be pissed off at authority too if I was born into perpetual war, an economic collapse and forced to go to indoctrination camps everyday that try to brainwash me into believing that dropping bombs on innocent people is the patriotic thing to do.

Regardless, maybe try talking to your kid. I don't see public humiliation having a positive impact on her life long-term.

I think that's not right. Parents should not do this kind of things. It would just worsen the situation. What's right is to talk about the problem with all the members of the family present. Showing your support would be a great feeling for teenagers.

Who the fuck do you think you are, sumit?

"Instilling Christian values" + "No electronics in the house" sounds like a bunch of religious extremists to me...

No wonder the kid is fucked up!
