I have a customer who is setting up a subscription service for their web application. They find fees for gateway and CC service to be too high for them. They want to use paypal. I'm inclined (obliged in fact) to do what they tell me to do. However I'm not certain from PayPals site. What level of account with PayPal they need. It seems to me they need a mechant account.. which is similar in cost to other services.

So I suppose my question is: Is paypal a good fit for a monthly subscription service... and if not why and who else can you recommed?

I think if they do less than $1000/mo Paypal is fine. If they're doing above that they will most likely save on fees by going through a cc processor and having a merchant account.

If they want to accept credit cards I believe they need either a premier or business account.

If you want a good but affordable cc processor I would recommend CDGCommerce. I use them.

Here's their link: www.cdgcommerce.com

If you're interested PM me for a promo offer/link. I can't seem to find my affiliate link but I'll look for it if you're interested. This is a previous one, offer may still be valid but sometimes I get ones that give you $25 or $50 for free: http://www.cdgcommerce.com/poker_promo.php?A=1127&PID=11

Business account will be all you need more than likely. That's what I have used for the past 5+ (7?!) years. I use them for many monthly recurring fees, as well as yearly.

With the new Google payment system you might want to take a look at that, cheaper than paypal

Thanks to all. I think I'll go with PayPal and keep my eye on google. Google's is too new for me. I'm rather risk averse and not a good canidate to be an early adopter of their new service. Although I like gmail and adsence very much.
