So by reading the many threads here related to Penguin it seems that lots of people are effected. The one thing people seem to agree on related to the Penguin update is that it targets SEO and the manipulation of rankings.

So how about this theory which I cannot backup but it's something i've been thinking about: What if Google made a crazy algorithm change that effected a wide range of sites JUST TO SEE what those sites would do about it. Would they build links, change content etc. Those that do something to fix their rankings are obvious SEO'ers because the reality is they are trying to manipulate their rankings back to where they were. Those that do nothing are not SEO'ers and will regain their rankings later because they did nothing. Almost like a trap.

I know it seems conspiracy theoriesh, but conspiracy theories are fun.

Your thoughts on this?

Doing a Slip test today....

what about those authority sites that keep getting links, regardless if they poop or not.

I don't think so. Too many factors involved. And it'd be hard as hell to monitor us all effectively.

Not really....particularly if it has to do with links....what was the average pre-penguin link analysis (velocity, anchors, type etc)....what is the average post-penguin link analyisis....all automated...it's freakin Google, i'm sure they can write a program to do that.

I dunno, I just kinda thought it was done as a consolidation strategy. I mean, Google isn't stupid, so they knew exactly how this change would have affected the rankings. They don't just go, "oh whoops! look, we fucked up the internet!".

Put a bunch of shitty sites high in the SERPs, so when people are searching for something they'll just think, "ahhh, hell with this, I'll just go search for it at Amazon", type of thing.

My point exactly...authority sites are always getting links so no issue....non authority sites that want to look like authority sites buy links or do link building creating unnatural patterns which maybe they are looking for right now. If you smack a true authority site down, its unlikely that they will change anything they are doing...if you smack a fake authority site maybe you will see an unnatural link pattern begin when the webmaster tries to fix it.

Okay, but what if you are building links... and you keep building links :)

Then it looks like your getting links as if its business as usual.

Maybe those MNS that built links once back in late 2011 and have not touched their sites again could be detected.

I dont think that was Google's purpose tho :D

I have not yet touched my site since it got hit, I plan on adding more content (making it look like it was added over the last 2 months) and build some web 2.0s to the new pages and buy some High PR links (pr3+) from sites that are in my niche.

And also change some meta tags and titles and text on the main page.

If you are right, then I may get facked. I am trying to upload the content to look as if it was posted in the past, in case I submit for a re-vision.

Well...under my theory youd be fine....but if you stopped because you got scurred by the loss in rankings....well then you'd be a target

You are assuming that Google is monitoring, tracking and analyzing EVERY site on the Internet, which it clearly does not have the capacity to do.

Hmmm, not actually dead, there are just big changes, especially when it comes to building links and more, staying in ranking nowadays is not that static, you have to be updated always. Read and read and know more.

Can you elaborate a little bit more, please?

I hope you're right OP because either way I win.

I neglect my shitty sites and they rise to the top with the pure insanity of the penguin update(s) and if I continue to neglect them they'll stay there! That'd be great.

I guess the moral is to have tons of shitty sites with no backlinks just aging and chilling in your portfolio. This has encouraged me to start 20-40+ more micro spam sites basically.

But the sad reality is that this is probably about anchor text ratios and backlinks from relevant sites. Which kind of means that SEO is just as easy as it ever was and can still be very easily manipulated if this is true. At least IMO.

ding ding ding ding ding

Want to rank a commercial term right now?

Don't have an EMD for the term in your url (unless its super hyphenated which doesn't count) + buy lots links with random anchors + buy a few links with the anchor term from relevant authority pages + focus on a page other than the homepage + onsite the term on the page

you win easily.

Want to fix your site?

While I can't confirm this will work yet, go find out which page on your site IS still ranking for the term (hopefully its not your privacy policy) and do above for that page, and build random links to your homepage.

Yup. SEO will be manipulatable for a long time. SEO is not dead, but there needs to be a shift in how SEOers act. For the first time it is no longer enough to just send a lot of links with the desired anchor text and rank.

Its amazing that it has worked for at least 8 years.
