Ping article or main URL?

Ok, I need to get this correct:

Which do you ping?

article:
http://site.com/my-bad-ass-article

site:
http://site.com
(assuming the service will find the http://site.com/feed.xml or whatever)

usually you ping with your feed, and the articles are automatically spidered.

pingoat.com form only asks for your main url and feed url
