I may be taking a military tour overseas (please dont ask questions) and its actually optional in my case as my service expires soon. One of the deciding factors is whether i can operate my online business overseas. I don't want to come home to my websites all dried up.

What are some of my options when it comes to internet connections? I looked up BGAN and the prices were absolutely insane. Also, if there is are usuage fees could i limit that by connecting to a VPN back home and have the actual upload and downloads registered to a computer back home?

I will probably have a close family member intern for me for a few hundred bucks a month but i dont want to get frustrated writing email after emailing explaining how to do something and would like to be able to do as much as i can myself. My last go around the internet available to us was atrocious and probably wouldnt be much faster satellite, can't plug your own laptop in, and even went to cutting the USB ports out. Not only that but you had to be a sweaty open stale room which was comfortable to be in. I really need to be as independent as possible to insure I can connect.

And before any of you homos start talking about pogue's surfing the internet all day on the FOB realize im an 11 fucking bravo with 18 months of combat deployment under my belt and fully realize how much of a goddamn pain in the ass this will be to juggle with my optempo.

Just curious whats the worst damage this can do to me because if it isn't worth it to run my online empire I probably won't go. Ideally, I would like it to be >1k per month, factoring in equipment and all fees throughout the tour.

Look forward to your responses.

Bravo, soldier.

Seriously. This thread could've been one line: "I'm a stuck up military dude that thinks he's better than everyone and is worried about being made fun of, how do I get Internets when i'm deployed in Afghanistan?" And I mean that in the best way possible, what's up with all the "I'm an 11 fucking bravo" and "don't ask questions" crap?

Make enough money, and buy your contract out. Then, you have no deployment problems.

I would imagine the military would have better solutions than something off the shelf. Just saying.

Might just be army thing, nm.

and "don't ask questions" crap?

Now this wasn't meant to be snarky, just not something to devulge info out on a public forum. Srsly, your looking way too much into a shoot the shit internet post just because the word "military" was in it.

Nope. If you want to send emails out, check your facebook status, and maybe once in awhile do a little webcam with wifey, yeah it'll do the job. I'm trying to a run a business here. At least keep it operational until i get back. This aint my first rodeo so i know what to expect.

This would be voluntary for me.

dude use gotomypc.com do the upload and download from your home computer

Thanks for the help guys. I know I'm a forum leech but I remember seeing some posts from some guys in SE asia that had some similar getups and wondering to see if anyone had some insight.

gotomypc looks phenomenal in that regard. the only thing that doesnt seem to have picked up anywhere is satellite internet. I figured by now there would be some type of affordable basic solutions. but looks like everything costs a shitload for hardware and then still have to pay alot for data fees. I'll check the links you provided and try to crunch so numbers to see how it works out. hmppph. not looking so good for me so far.

VPN or GoToMyPc accomplishes nothing, as you will still use tons of bandwidth receiving the display of your home computer. Do they even have cellular service where you're going? If they do, you can get at least some sort of cellular data plan, but it may be highly limited.

The first site I saw mentioned was Middle East Satellite Internet service providers: Two-way broadband access, which uses around a 3' dish, which will be typical for most satellite internet services, but it doesn't require any form of phone line for uplink.

But if I were you, I would look up the city you're going to be in and see what cellular options are available, because that stands to be the easiest and best deal, but it probably won't be as fast as what we have here.

My concern is uploading and downloading to and from the servers. plus backups, databases, large media files, etc. Putting that bandwidth on a PC back and connecting remotely would help immensely.

It's possible but i highly doubt it. Cellular is mostly limited to simple prepaid phones you slip a sim card into. they might have data plans now, but somehow i really highly doubt. cellular was really very basic i cant really imagine them ballooning into mobile internet devices already.

I tried looking into it but cant seem to find anything on cellular. Still seem to think sat is the best option.
