Preference: Sales % Commission or Fixed Per Lead?

Hey,

I've been testing out all different types of promotions, offers, commission structures, networks, etc, just to sort of dive in the affiliate industry. I've made my way to Commission Junction simply because I was impressed with not only the selection but the legitimacy of their products and offers. I was wondering whether or not any of you prefer or have seen a difference in success with offers that pay a percentage of total sales or a fixed amount per lead/action.

I am currently promoting offers that pay 8% of the total sale. I only choose this particular niche because there is high search traffic, high demand, and surprisingly low PPC competition. The only thing bothering me is that to get a decent payout at 8% I need to promote products that are quite expensive ($200-$600). For this niche, that price is expected, but it seems like its going to be very hard to get conversions, regardless. I feel like I might have more success with easier converting offers that pay a fixed amount of say $10-$20.

What are you thoughts, opinions, advice?

Yeah I thought that makes more sense. Just having trouble finding a decent paying fixed offer that isn't flooded with competition. I've been going through all of these networks and I find it hard to believe that the 'big guys' are even promoting any of these. Everything seems to either be 1) some ridiculous health pill/drink/system, 2) credit/loan stuff or 3) get rich from home schemes. I'm new to this so I probably don't know what I'm talking about.

Of course it's all ridiculous. It's our job to make it seem not ridiculous. Hence the marketing thing ;)
 
I might consider keeping this site for SEO purposes and putting up some other with fixed offers for PPC. The site has been up for about 3 days and I'm already getting some organic traffic without even building a single backlink.

Haha yea I understand that. I was pointing out the flooded competition for practically every single offer on all of these aff. networks. I know you have to keep digging for niches and undiscovered areas so that's what I'm doing now. Not easy though..

The search results on google may be saturated, but there's an assload of ways to run them. It's like looking for a niche, but looking for a high converting placement instead. The CPA niches don't saturate as easily, because they're pretty general interest. A damn assload of people(even those not explicitely searching for em) are interested. So just because you see a lot of ads for something doesn't mean it's too competitive.

For the niche offers you're running, the landscape changes. There's not as many traffic sources, and the offers may not be as good since they're not planning on PPC guys running them. Talk to the company and try to get it raised to a somewhat competitive level, or just switch niches.

Not all offers are viable in PPC. If there's only one in an obscure niche and it's just not converting, sometimes you just have to leave it at that.

Perhaps you'd do better looking around at obscure offers and seeing which of those look like they have potential(high payout+good lander), rather than the other way around.
 
The CTR looks really good but for the two days I've been running PPC campaigns there haven't been any sales - unless they haven't been registered yet (which is possible). I'm not sure how long they take to register (CJ).

Adwords Ads were averaging a 2% CTR (117 clicks).
The CTR off my landing page(s) ended up being 60% (70 clicks).

There were three different landing pages and obviously these are small numbers to make a conclusion from.

I think having high priced products just sort of scares people and they aren't always sitting there with the credit card out..
 
Continuation question:

Aim for a ton of small paying, easy to convert fixed offers ($2-3) or a few high paying hard to convert ($20-$40)?

I know no one likes giving detail - I'm just curious to see what peoples preferences are..
