A friend had a dinner party the other night and made some bad ass chili in his Wolfgang Puck pressure cooker so I'm thinking of asking for one for Christmas since I typically like to cook a lot of something once a week and reheat that for meals.

I'm getting back into fat burning mode after a vacation that consisted of eating like a pig and drinking copious amounts of brown ale. So I'll need to make a bunch of lean but flavorful chicken once a week. And since I hear you can pretty much throw any meat + veggies in one of these and it'll come out awesome, I'm looking for new meals to try out if I can make the calorie numbers work.

So does anyone own one of these? Do you like it? Recipes? Any recommendations on a brand & model?

Like a slow cooker? I've put like 3-4 thawed chicken breasts in with 1 cup of tomato juice, 2-3 cups of chicken broth, baby carrots, teaspoon of brown sugar, and let it cook, it turned out pretty well.

It isn't anywhere near as good as homemade deep fried chicken though, but fried chicken is probably the best food ever.

I watched some movie about being up really high in the mountains and they couldn't cook potatoes worth a shit without using their pressure cooker. I'm not sure that's helpful but that's all I know.

similar, but these lock in the steam and increase the pressure up to 15 psi. That speeds up the cooking. Thx for the recipe idea.

You deff want one. Been using one for long time. Learned from Irish Ex with corned beef and cabbage. You can cook damn near any meat in it plus veggies super fast. Protip. Always brown meat in a skylit before cookin in pressure cooker that way no grey boiled meat look. ProProTip. Brown in bottom of the cooker to save on dishes

can you explain this? I don't understand how browning works in these things or how it saves on dishes.

This. Pressure cookers are dope.

They definitely take some getting used to though. You need to acquire an entirely different feel to cooking times, food prep, and in this case psi too.

The first time you cook something new in it don't expect it to come out perfect, although really if you follow the recommended psi and time settings for whatever you're cooking you'll probably be OK. Once you get the hang of it though you can do a shitload with it. It'll slam out chilis, soups, chickpeas, veggies, meats, even pasta if you eat it. When you've used it enough you'll develop a feel for it, just like cooking other things like when you 'know' when water's about to boil, when to pull the turkey, stir the stirfry, etc.

I use mine a lot for cooking dried shit from scratch like lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans, etc. Also good for blasting veggies and then dumping them into a processor for a soup base. Get one and go to town.

dmnEPC, MSTeacher & guerilla - what brand and models do you guys have? Any limitations of your model?

Right now I'm leaning towards the Instant Pot® IP-CSG60 5-in-1 Programmable Pressure Cooker, 6.33qt: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00479OWFO/ref=s9_simh_gw_p79_d0_g79_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_r=1N496TR5T2F5GV41B63K&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938811&pf_rd_i=507846"]Instant Pot® IP-CSG60 5-in-1 Programmable Pressure Cooker, 6.33qt[/ame]

It's a bit of a roll of the dice since its not a well-known brand and there are several 1-star negative reviews for it being DOA. But people who used it for awhile seem to love it, its big, and it has a rice function unlike the comparable Cuisinart model - which is awesome because I cook 6 cups of rice every week to go with the chicken.

Ok so heres the deal with browning. I prefer a stove top pressure cooker. If you dont brown your meat (assuming your doing a roast or some other chunk meat) you are going to wind up with disgusting looking grey boiled meat. It will taste fine but your loosing the aesthetics and texture of the meat.

Just remember it doesnt have to look like this. The idea is to sear the outsides (your not cooking the meat) so what you do is just put it in the bottom of a real hot skillet (or stove top preasure cooker) and sear all of the sides

Browning the meat by frying it first hugely improves the flavour due to the Maillard reaction.

Pressure cookers are dope. Soup in 6 minutes, and you lose less nutrients.

I think growing up with pressure cookers being used in almost every meal makes me take em for granted :p

We used to have "tower" model one but the newer ones are kinder shizer, "presto's" are decent, and throw in a george foreman and makes cooking easy :)
