Hi all,

Quick question.
I have a retail site. When a user selects a category they are given a list of products in that category. Now when the user clicks on a product what do you think is the best place for them to go, ie to a product page on my site, or straight to the merchants product page?

I think product pages are the way to go because you can make an attempt to really sell the product.

You will have the opportunity to write descriptions, product specs, product reviews and greater opportunity to rank for a wider range of keywords.

My new approach is to give visitor a choice. So I list the items just like you. I give minimum info to all the products - like price, some promo text and the name of the shop where the item is available (so people are not surprised when they are transferred to another website). Name of the product and it's thumb picture are actually the links to full item description. Apart from this I placed GO TO STORE button so if prospects are decided to buy they can skip the full page and go to store straight.

Than I got a full item description page with reviews, rating, description and price comparison. I do everything to make sure prospect stays on my website and press aff link when he's ready to buy. (In this stage I change GO TO STORE button into BUY NOW button)

Before I was just making a list of products. CTR was very good, but conversion rate after people were transferred to actual shops was poor.

Hopefully my new approach will improve it.

Also you will get visitors from search engines who will find your full product page. So some extra targeted visitors with minimum SEO effort. Plus website with reviews, descriptions etc is probably more content reach.

Basically I have the same problems as you :) It's probably a matter of testing and adjusting the things.
