I need a program for my desktop that can work with any version of Windows.

I want something where I can choose to search a specific folder (which would also search sub folders if they exist) for images that look like the one in the attachment. It needs to find images that have this gray patch in them (color #808080).

Please pm if interested and state how much you would charge for this.

I think you'll have to supply more detail to get coders even interested.

ANY Version meaning

Windows 3.1
Windows 2K
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Windows 95
Windows ME
Windoes 98
Windows NT 4
Windows Server Versions?

Should the program be able to crawl a network?
What output should the program generate? List of files, Files copied to specific folder?
Should the program be a desktop program?
Is the use of framewroks (Java, .net) possible?

I was told that it wouldn't be difficult to make this work on any OS. I use Windows Vista.

The output should simply be the folder name of where the image can be found as well as the name of the grayed image.

Yes the program should be a desktop program.

I don't know about the frameworks thing. I just want something simple created that I can use to search folders on my desktop, that's all.

I've had an offer so far to do this for $200, but I am hoping to go less than that. Please PM me what you think the job is worth. It would be great if we could get this done by next weekend. Thanks.

go to rentacoder.com.

Post there, get it done by some indian for 20 bucks.

Don't complain about quality though.

OK.. you obviously do not know how to specify a coding task:

a) No, it is not easy to get this done "working on any desktop"

You can do this - easily - only if you use a higher level framework, that is why I am asking about .net or java.

Keep in mind that these frameworks might not run on older machines (.net especially) and add to the space the program needs (the framework needs to be installed, which is about 20MB for Java or .net)

Also
b) "output the folder where the image can be found and the name of the grayed image" - What is that supposed to mean?

I know I am sounding like I am making fun of you, but trust me, I am not.

I have worked as a developer and project manager.

Keep this in mind:
1. The programmer will not know what you mean unless you say it. No mind reading. If you say "any OS" he/she will think of ways to do this on ANY OS, including macs, linux machines, C64, etc..

2. If the job is paid by the hour, the programmer will embellish any feature you did not specify clearly. Thus maximizing his profits. (Milking the maximum)

3. If the job is paid a fixed rate, the programmer is going to cut corners on any feature you did not specify clearly. Thus maximizing his profits (less time / more $ per hour)

If you need more information look up "project scope", "defining requirements", "feature creep".

If you need even more info, hit me up.

Just so everyone else doesn't get into the bind I just did...

I just found out that this person wanted to be paid after the project is delivered. Which I can understand but I asked for a payment upfront or a down payment to secure my time. I was then informed that there are others working on this project. So I don't now who all he has committed to on this or what the deal is.

I just want you all to be careful. I hate being told to do a project and then find out they went behind me and got someone else to do the work, for more money I might add. It was actually my original quote price. But it just leaves me in the dust cause I worked on something that now has no value.

So I guess I would like to hear what you all would do in this case? emp? For projects under $500. Do you all usually request it paid upfront or a down payment? When I do the down payment option I usually ask for 20 - 25% to get my time and resource.

I don't know what do you all think?

Dev101, I never said that I had somebody else working on the project already.

Please read my private messages ENTIRELY.

If you have it done, that is fine, but I want to see it first. I told you this in the beginning so it shouldn't be a surprise to you. I'm not paying for something that I haven't tested myself. What if it doesn't work? What would be the point of me sending you $125.

You also have me skeptical because you've completed the program in such a short period of time, and you've literally asked me nothing about it. No clarifications, no specifics, nothing.

This, people, is why you use escrow. Even if you know who you want to do you project you should both go sign up at rent a coder and work through there (or eLance).
