proxy site makeover... bye to big server bills

i have a number of proxy sites... and for the most part they are crappy sites to have. they require vps hosting minimum, barely any hosts want to put them up and their isn't all that much profit to be made with adsense once you pay your bills.

i was thinking about selling them all off but i knew i wouldn't get much for them (even though they get good traffic and have been around for a while).

the solution finally came today. i slapped up some content ABOUT proxy services/scripts and got a cool form on proxy.org that randomly selects a site from their list and uses it as a proxy.

i'm sure a bit portion of user won't notice the difference and will keep coming back since they are getting what they are looking for. eventually traffic might taper off but i don't care since those big server bills are history.

that's actually a decent solution for lame proxy sites. i had about ten, maybe i'll dump that form on em. thanks.

A majority of my profit was always from the adsense on the front page anyway. Its a really good idea.
 
in countries like iraq, china and thailand people use proxies to look at porn (i guess because of isp terms and conditions). the only thing that might work is something like foreign dating... i doubt it would convert.

the main reason servers get slammed i found is because people release huge porn video files via the web proxy. i found this out when someone used one of my sites to make a tutorial of how to do this.

Maybe zip/email submits for things like free ipods, etc. After all, probably most of your traffic is going to be from kids/teens in school who don't want to pay for anything but like the idea of a free ipod enough to enter their email.

I'll give it a shot, maybe setup a shared hosting account and put up like 10 proxies with that form from above. I'll do 5 proxies with adsense, and 5 with rotating submit offers.

Assuming this thread isn't long dead, I'll post the revenue + traffic info.

Back when I ran proxies I tried "free xbox" etc zip submits. Doesn't work. There's a reason AdSense hates proxies - because the clicks don't convert. :D It's all shitty Iranian/Chinese traffic, unless you can get good American volume then you will make bank. But obviously now (summer) is a bad time.

True. Did anyone ever actually try and target the proxy in webmaster tools to the US though?
US traffic could be glorious.
 
I had major US traffic on one of my old huge networks.

I stuck some CPM ads on the home page, and the mobile ones were doing well.
 
btw

I never got around to this, but you might want to look into some blackhat proxying. This was a plan I had but didn't complete:

- huge NETWORK of proxies...more every day because if you do this right it's all automated

- modify phpProxy to change common ads to YOURS...i.e. adblock on myspace changes to yours, etc.. (you wouldn't be able to do the form thing this thread is about if you did this. unless you want to look for some javascript exploits)

- spam filters (eg websense) find your proxy by scraping google. so basically, you rank and are happy for about 2 days until you get raped (websense kills your traffic over night). so get some blogspot blogs (any parasite hosts) and rank the shit out of them, cloaking to your proxy. may as well make multiple parasites for every proxy. if one goes down, make another

- comment spam Iranian blogs (find some good arabic keywords)...thats where i got most of my traffic from and though it doesn't pay much per click, you do get a LOT of clicks

so i've been buying up proxies from people fed up with the hosting issues and getting serious traffic. i have a few generic templates going with the proxy.org form integrated.

the traffic seems to be tapering off but the process is gradual.

it's tempting to slap up a big olde CPA landing page on a former high traffic proxy site and see what happens. :D
