Getting my kid a PS3 for Xmas and I need some help.
When perusing BestBuy.com I see a 120gig system and a 250gig system however some other sites have 80/gig & 160gig systems. I know we want the one with the built in WiFi and Blu-Ray player but I'm suspicious of sites selling the 160gig version as it seems like it's maybe older software or something.

I know that there are some compatibility issues with some PS2 games in the 1.90 version of the software and now they have ver 1.92 which fixed some of that. It's just that I haven't seen any advertised that disclose what version the PS3 is running and thought maybe the hard drive size was possibly an indicator of an older unit model or something.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I just bought the 120GB Slim Ratchet/Clank and Little big planet bundle. Comes with wifi(streaming content from your computer is awesome) and bluray functionality. I believe they all have wifi and definitely bluray, the Ps3 slim does not play PS2 games..The 250 slim is essentially the same. I would assume the slim versions have the latest firmwarez

They ALL have Blu ray and built in Wifi. As far as Software goes the System will auto update its software first thing after it connects to the net.

Go for the Slim, and get a large hard drive. (If the Kid likes to download content).80 is fine for me, but i mostly just download rockband songs. I have friends who have had the 80 gig for a while (2 Years almost) , and they haven't even filled up 10 gigs

Definitely get the slim. A friend of mine has burnt out 2 of the older PS3's, the
slim is an improvement!

There's a 120gig model on amazon for $299.00. I have enough hotel points with some of either of the major chains (Hilton, Marriott, ICHotels) to get enough giftcards where it won't cost me anything. After looking at the official PS3 site, it appears the newer models aren't all backwards compatible - maybe they're phasing out all the PS2 games.

As far as I knew only the first version of the PS3's were backwards compatible.

Sony wants to make money selling you PS1 & 2 games on the PS online store!
