Radio Plays

He is - THE CACTUS!
OK, so I intend to go on a few roadtrips to wine country this summer and if I don't have someone in the car talking to me, I tend to drift off even with music playing.

So I was hoping people might know of some entertaining radio plays I could listen to. And I mean a proper radio play, with a few actors, and sound effects n stuff... Not an audio book, which is just some guy reading a book.

I've already got The Mighty Boosh, Red Dwarf and all five books of the Hitch Hiker's Guide saga. So that gives a decent indication of what I'm into I guess.
I've already had suggestions for The Goon Show (although didn't like it so much) and the Dirk Gently series.

So, any recommendations guys?

The classics of the Seventies, CBS Radio Mystery Theater. They were pretty well written and performed. The show was hosted by E.G., Marshall.

I've seem them for sale online in mp3, but don't know the quality.

Check out zencast.com - all sorts of great shows and loads of classics in there. Sherlock Holmes, The Shadow and Ray Bradbury.

They put a lot of effort into it. They're really quality.

Where did you find it? Download?

Wow! I can't believe the mighty boosh has spread around the world - fucking great shit!

If you like that sort of stuff, how about some old Monty Python sketches? I used to have a cassette of The meaning of Life in my car years back... not their best, but certainly kept me amused.

There's a radio play of The Shadow? Suuuweeetah!
Thanks Marlow.

Oh, and Alexa, good suggestion about CBS Mystery Theater.
I found the first season, listened to the first episode in the car this morning. That's some well made radio play!

You're welcome. Would be curious to know what you found - and liked the best!

^Awesome listening.

Well, it's not to everyones taste, but Blue Jam by Chris Morris is just about the funniest / most entertaining thing I have ever heard. Pure genius, and if you like that he's done some other pretty good stuff as well, 'On the Hour' and the Chris Morris Music Shows. You can strip the audio stuff out of this:
Chris Morris | blue jam | isoHunt - the BitTorrent and P2P search engine
although Brass Eye is well worth a watch.

yeah dude imma be the first to say this but the harry potter books on tape are actually pretty entertaining. Get the british one for comedy value. You cant understand a word they say

LazyHippy: Like America, we also have an ABC. Unlike America, it's a government funded multimedia empire that's amazingly poorly run... and for the most part, the station acronym stands for Another British Comedy...

Alexa: Demonoid. I've got a couple invites left if you want one.

Bofu: See that's the thing though... music just kind lulls me to sleep if I can't move to it. I've tried heaps of different stuff. Classical, metal, death metal, grind core, industrial, hip hop, trip hop, techno, reggae, glitchpop, jungle and even some good old Richard Cheese.
No dice. Eyelids go down if I'm driving and listening to music.
Probably a learned behaviour from always sleeping in the back on family trips.

Deliguy: Even with the aircon on, the Australian sun is likely to melt coffeepoles too quickly :( And putting it in a thermos just means you're stickin a large metal cylander to your face all day, sucking, and getting a brown ring around your mouth... and if I'm going to do that, I'd rather it be at a sex party, not on the way to a vineyard.

Haha. At least our poorly run, government funded multimedia empire does produce some of the best shit about... then sells it to you guys! (and they did bring Summer Heights High over here too... :D)
