Not sure if the news of this has made it over the Atlantic, but in recent weeks there has been a huge viral campaign in the UK on Facebook and Twitter to upstage X Factor (karaoke contest hosted by Simon Cowell, and successor to the Pop Idol series) in the Christmas number one race.

For the past four years, the winner of X Factor has immediately won the Christmas singles chart, which traditionally has been the most important single release of the year.

This year there was a campaign that went viral to defeat the X-Factor winner by purchasing en masse Killing in the Name by Rage Against The Machine.

Rage won :banana_sml:

And both acts were signed to Sony / BMG, so Sony made twice as much money as they would have normally...

Sounds like the sort of thing dreamed up by an enterprising PR person to me.

True, but either way it was only marketed through social networking, so whether it was thought up by Sony or not it's still quite interesting. Especially when you take into account that X Factor has had twenty weeks of wall-to-wall TV and newspaper coverage.

I downloaded. Not 'cos I like RATM, I just dislike that douchebag xfactor winner. And Simon Cowell.

But I think they should've promoted a promising, unsigned artist instead, as it was download only.

They promoted rage against the machine because it says "follow the leader" as in everyone follows xfactor / simon cowell and buys the records.

Ole Simons gutted.

I read that Ollie Murs has been signed by Simons label too even tho he didnt win, expect to see him in the charts late next year.

Man that band has some of the most idiotic lyrics i have ever heard in my life

Decent beats though, good voice, just wish the guy had an IQ above 27

Decent beats? wtf?

Zach de la Rocha and Tom Morello are some of the most intelligent people in music. They still to this day use their voice to shed light on issues such as poverty and civil rights.

"Tom Morello graduated in 1982 and began attending Harvard University. He graduated in 1986 with a BA degree (with honors) in political science. "

^as if any other record label is not part of the machine? sony offered them complete creative control. Coupled with sony's massive distribution channels the band was able to get their music and message to the masses.
