I'm building and ecommerce store and I want to rank for my terms in google.com.AU (australia).

My question: will australian only links make it easier for me to rank in google.com.au, or is a link a link a link, no matter what.

In other words, if google sees all australian links to this site, will they assume its just an australian site and therefore give it more of a push up the australian SERPs?

Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure it depends on where your site is physically hosted based on your site's IP address. So, if your site was hosted in Australia you'd have a better chance of ranking there. Not sure about the link thing, but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to have some australian links even if the effect would be minimal.

Yeh i've heard about the geo location of the hosting thing. Too bad australian hosting is so much more expensive than any of the U.S providers.

I am not sure on this but location of your server has no effect on your local rankings. Please correct me If i am wrong.

Consider yourself corrected.

Server location and TLD both have an effect.

Australian links will be better, but any links are good.

I have .com.au hosted in Aus that have only international links that do well in google.com.au

Same with .co.nz

@ Red virus:

how do you figure that.

is it just domain?

surely if G sees au domain, au IP and au links it is more likely to rank in au serps.

Where do you host in aus Rob?

Was looking around then, its fuckin expensive for an au server.

How about you add your site to google webmaster tools, and set the preferred location?

From my experience with the .gr domains, I am pretty sure you will find it easier with an australian tld as well.

I know its possible to rank esp with tld.

Im just wondering if its better/easier/quicker with au links and au IP

I bought a reseller account with jumba.com.au - i wouldn't either recommend or not recommend them.

Yup, hosting is more expensive in aus.
