I'm playing with the idea of dropping a social networking site. Any recommendations on a good engine to run it with?

Ruby on Rails.

(you said engine and not script so it sounds like you are looking to do a lot of customization).

Might as well code your own in Rails -- there are a few shells out there as well where a good part of the work has been done already.

elgg is decent and functional. I got excited about Ning when they started letting you use your own domain and ads, but the custom interface has too many holes in it for my taste. elgg is stable and versatile. While not a true social networking platform, TikiWiki provides many of the same features one would expect of one, and works well.

BuddyPress is sort of big news right now for the first time in a while, because their recent release makes it compatible with standard WordPress installs (as opposed to requiring MU as it has previously.) If you're familiar with WordPress you might look into BuddyPress, since it is essentially a social networking-style extension of the platform.
