I know some members here have management gigs, and others run their own businesses.

I’ve run businesses, but I’ve never read a good rock solid book on managing people. And I read a lot.

So what books would you suggest to someone that was about to start a new job managing a department of about 10 or 12.

Part of the concern here is the possible animosity some of these folks will feel about the company going outside and bringing in a stranger. Not really the kind of job where I can tell them to suck my dick if they fuck around and are hostile.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Interestingly enough, "the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" has lots of great ideas as far as management goes. Specifically conflict resolution and group dynamics. If you anticipate personnel issues, it's absolutely worth a read.

Rework is excellent. Also if managing software development try The Mythical Man Month.

Appreciate the input. Thanks a lot for your help.

btw I think I'll go with "The 7 Habits of Highly effective people" first. Probably check out the others too.

I got some good information from Blair Singer's work. I've listened to recordings, not read his books, but I think the recordings I listened to covered much of the same material as his books. Some of it is pretty basic material but he makes a lot of good points. They definitely helped me in management. Sales Dogs and the Code of Honor are the two I listened to.

I was a corporate drone for many, many years. I didn't like most of the books I read on people leadership. Most of them either preach "how to be an a-hole boss", or go too far the other direction into "how to coddle your team into being a-holes".

One that I did like: The Pragmatic Bookshelf | Behind Closed Doors

Oh, and for your specific situation (new boss, unfamiliar surroundings)..this one is pretty good:

I didn't agree with everything in it, but it's a really good resource to figure out what you should do in the first 3 months.

OH well, I'll chime in.
