Resources for learning about hosting?

I've come to the conclusion that it's time to learn about hosting. HostGator just suspended my money site because it was overloading the server and that's after 6 months of inadequate service.

The problem is that I have NO idea what I need to look for or how much of it I need in terms of another hosting provider.

Where can I go to learn hosting basics so I'm not just staring blankly at hundreds of different numbers wondering what the fuck I should be doing?

Or, if there's anyone out there who wants to talk me through it and help work out what I actually need, I'll be happy to use your affiliate link.

Well there is really not much to learn from a high level perspective other than that you were on shared hosting and probably need dedicated hosting... Like a VPS or something. Hope I've been super resourceful and thank you for reading.

Haha.. Super helpful. The problem I'm having is that I don't know what I need. How much RAM, what kid of CPU, and all that shit.

Money site gets about 1000 visitors / day and I'm pushing it up to around 3000 by the end of the year. I've got about 30 other perifierial sites floating around the money site that combined, bring about 1000 visitors / day. They're all on wordpress and draw traffic from all around the world (mostly US, then Australia, then UK). Any hints?

What's the difference between Linux and Windows Server? And what do I need to use to just have a cPanel?

Given that HostGator has suspended your website because it got too big, you probably won't have more luck with other "unlimited" hosting providers.

Instead, I think you should either go with a big shared hosting account or, even better, a managed VPS. You will probably be given cPanel access in either case.

At this point in time, I'm looking at the wired tree managed VPS. It looks like the best deal out there.

It sounds like you need a VPS. A VPS will allow you to use all of the resources that the hosting companies provides to your VPS.
