Today, it's been 10 years since Dimebag's death.

I remember the day it happened.

I had a friend in highschool who used to burn me old metal cds (Metallica, Megadeth, Pink Floyd). One day he said "you'll like these guys" and handed me a burned copy of Vulgar Display of Power.

I liked it so much, that the next time I saw him I said "dude these guys are sick, do they have other CDs?"

He said "yeah, but their guitarist just died in Ohio from a crazed fan."

Little did I know how influential this guy was in the 90s groove metal era, and how sick of a guy he was supposed to be.

This was the second concert I ever went too and by far the most insane. It was at the Trocadero around 92-93. They was about 5 songs in and some dude jumped on and off the stage. The bouncers started escorting him out of the building and the entire band stopped the song. Phil started berating the bouncers and told them to bring the dude back. After that it was sheer pandemonium. I was 5 rows back from the stage and we were lifting out feet up, because the crowd was pushing to get up front and jump on stage. I thought I was going to die. Crazy thing was, when the crowd let out, we realized that the first 7-8 rows of seats had been completely torn from the concrete.

Literally one of the few times in my life when I though I was going to die, but definitely one of the best concerts I have ever been too.

Never been a consistent listener of Pantera, but I've always had a special place in my heart for this song:

It's like the soundtrack to testosterone.

Respectfully, I disagree that it's only someone screaming. I listen to many genres and most metal bands require a decent amount of talent.

I agree that the lyrical content is darker than most, but there's usually more instrumental depth compared to many other genres. For me, something about headbanging riffs sound great to my ears.

Depending on what you like in music (more positive message, technical instrumental pieces, great lyricism), feel free to PM me and I'll show you some metal songs that may have more meaning to you.

I call bullshit on this. Unless you where a skateboarding thrasher in mexifornia, it is doubtful this quote ever happened. Which brings the validity of the rest of your post into question.

I didn't say I dislike all metal. I grew up listening to the likes of Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Ratt, Iron Maiden, Quiet Riot, Guns and Roses, etc. Then I progressed into industrial, listening to bands like like Ministry, Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, Revolting Cocks, Front 242, Frontline Assembly, Nitzer Ebb, and at the same time into softer pop like Depeche Mode, New Order, Happy Mondays, Blur, Pet Shop Boys, the Pixies, Primal Scream... well the list goes on and on. When I think about the number of live shows I saw in Vancouver in my early 20s it's really quite an extensive list.

Then I got heavily into the early 90s rave scene and fell in love with electronic music and have pretty much listened to it in all its various guises ever since.

When I worked at Cannabis Culture my workmates would subject me to long sessions of the likes of Slayer and it drove me mad. Yes, I know there's more to it, and Pantera might be a much more dynamic band than the examples here illustrate, but I really don't enjoy the screaming.

You have good tastes in music. But there is more to Pantera IMO. You said you listened to Skinny Puppy/Ministry. Just think of how people think of Skinny Puppy when they first hear it.. it doesn't process.. it sounds like demons screaming in some technological hell or something. But after you listen to it a few more times it's fucking magnificent. Of course their shit after Goettel died in '95 sucks either way.

Just saying some music needs to rape your eardrums a few times before you begin to like it. It's like how nobody likes their first drink of alcohol or first cigarette drag either.

If you're not too old to like new things, especially aggressive things, then Pantera offers the feels of fighting, testosterone induced aggressive-rage, veins popping out of your forehead fun. Great stuff for working out.

Personally I used to laugh at all big hair bands and hate them. But recently, I wanted something lighter than my usual Industrial, Dark EBM, alternative, melancholy (Pink Floyd) or real Metal (Metalica, Pantera, Tool). So big hair has grown on me big time in the last few yrs especially Ozzy for some reason. So different rhymes for different times.

To be honest, I think I would find Skinny Puppy a bit challenging all over again. I just like happy music these days, with nice melodies and vocals. I don't know if it's about getting older or what. I used to like harder acid trance/house, faster and more aggressive stuff, and now I much more prefer a nice, much more laid back, 126 bpm Chicago style funky house track.

Funny enough, one of my first real design gigs was to do the 12" label for Subconscious Records first release with Phil Western and Dwayne (aka Duck). It was 1993, before I even got into design school, and I used my girlfriend's parent's computer and Corel Draw. The design was kind of garbage looking back on it, I really didn't know what I was doing, but it's cool to be part of that. It was just a couple years later that Dwayne was gone :(

Tool! That was the other one I was subjected to relentlessly by my coworkers. I just might be too old, or I'm not alpha enough, to really dig that kind of aggressive music. I'm going to make an effort to give it a try though, and revisit some of the stuff I used to listen to.

A lot of it is prob age. Same here I'm mostly playing more mellow stuff these days. But when looking for physical energy I still often play the hard stuff.
