Ron Paul to propose $1 trillion in spending cuts

Paul, a longtime critic of federal spending not authorized by the Constitution, will call for eliminating the federal Education, Commerce, Energy, Interior, and Housing and Urban Development Departments.

He'd eliminate all foreign aid and spending on wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and freeze government spending to 2006 levels -- the last year that the GOP had complete control of establishing the federal budget.

The president's pay would be cut to $39,336, which Paul's campaign says is equivalent to the median personal income of an American worker, and the federal workforce would be cut by 10%. The president earns $400,000 a year.

The Pres should earn more than 40k/year.

Yeah, cause they'd totally be on the verge of foreclosure and bankruptcy, right? Just imagine, those poor lil black girls in the white house, forced to eat ramen noodles every meal.

The Pres should earn more than 40k/year.

Why? Nearly everything is paid for while they are in office. Every dollar is pretty much banked. This is not even including all the personal money they'd earn from appearances, books, gifts, etc. Oh, and lest we not forget the pension he gets paid annually after having "served" the country while still earning from appearances, books, gifts, etc.

Honestly, aside from state-level offices and below, public officials shouldn't earn anything because of all the benefits that come with the office. If you removed all the benefits, then I could see a small yearly salary being paid to them.

The truth of the matter is, career politicians are there for the money. If they couldn't make it while in office then they wouldn't be running all the time. Their annual salary is just icing on a very thick slice of cake.

im guessing the president will not actually spend a single dime and everything will be paid for by the state while in power.. even then you need to make more than 40K. Especially given that you can only serve 2 terms you need to have some money stashed away to run with after you get put out from office.

Seems like paying the President Of The Free World only $40k/yr would open him up to much more corruption.

He's taking the $40k salary voluntarily. The typical salary for the president is $400k/year. RP is taking the $40k/year because that's the median personal income for americans.

It's a good statement to make, since most politicians get paid over 4 times that. How could they possibly relate to the problems of the people they want to vote for them under those circumstances?

I think congressional pay, or most public service pay, should be tied to the average personal income. At least for congress and senate. They have no incentive to better the country, when it doesn't matter what they do, they are guaranteed their raises, because they simply have to vote for it.
