I was wondering if the people who use bots to get to their links out there are sending their bots through proxies.
Do they run the bots through their home pc or through their web server or both? Do they just use open free proxies?

Thanks. Getting more into programming now but... What is a good way to test proxies to find a good one? Is there an HTTP equivalent of a ping command so that you could "ping" a site through a proxy and see if you get a reply? It just seems like transferring a significant amount of data would be a sucky way to test a connection.

the easy way is through a script. have it pull itself and print the ip. If it is something other than the regular ip and the pull is successful than add it to the success list. The manual way is to add them to your browser under teh connection settings=>proxy and go to whatsmyip.org

Yeah I meant automated sniffing for proxies. An obvious easy way to test for a good/bad proxy is to make a request through the proxy to a resource that you control. That way you can control the amount of data transferred for the test. But I just thought maybe it wasn't a good idea to ever hit up a machine you control. I'm not sure if that could give something away or not.
I'm probably overthinking it anyway as usual.

PS The tor network is good for anonymity but it's slow as hell.
