Amazing revelations have emerged concerning already existing government plans to overhaul the way the internet functions in order to apply much greater restrictions and control over the web.

Lawrence Lessig, a respected Law Professor from Stanford University told an audience at this years Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech conference in Half Moon Bay, California, that “There’s going to be an i-9/11 event” which will act as a catalyst for a radical reworking of the law pertaining to the internet.

Lessig also revealed that he had learned, during a dinner with former government Counter Terrorism Czar Richard Clarke, that there is already in existence a cyber equivalent of the Patriot Act, an “i-Patriot Act” if you will, and that the Justice Department is waiting for a cyber terrorism event in order to implement its provisions.....

no shit.. I'm leaving the country sometime in the next decade for sure. It just keeps getting worse. Yay let's give up all our freedoms so we can be safe. yea.

I really can't say that I'm terribly surprised. But leaving the country won't help. All the old style "write your congressman and representative" stuff will help, but it is an unending battle to keep the US government out of things they have no business in.

Can you imagine how threating the Internet is to a 70+ year old politician like McCain who grew up asking the phone operator to connect him to 'John or Jane Doe' ? No control or even accountability that they can see.

They know there is money in it; and know they must follow the money, but they would love to slap a 'classified - need to know only' stamp on the whole damn thing.

The American Gov. are nothing but fucking DOGS and they will stop at fucking nothing to have complete control over everything.

FUCK THEM!

You know in the old days if they did this all the domainers and website owners would sue the living shit out of whoever was responsible.

But nowadays the stupid govt would give immunity to ICANN, Internet2, the US Govt and everyone else involved like they did with the telecomm FISA bill.

We need to hammer on the FISA bill and get someone to challenge its constitutionality.

fuck GWB and fuck our government. Bunch of no talent ass clowns.

Look, I hate GWB just as much as the next guy. But if you really think that Bush was the REAL power behind the first patriot act ... or this new thing ... you don't understand how much of a puppet the guy is.

I'd bet almost anything that the first bill was written before Bush took office ... and that Clinton had nothing to do with it.

Things like the Patriot Act sit around in someone's desk draw waiting for shit like 9/11 to happen, so they can pull it out.
Damn, you think they could even TYPE that damn thing in the 20days between September 11th and it passing on October 1st?

The biggest issue with this bill is that it will have global repercussions, which it damn well shouldn't.
The internet is a global network, yet crap like this and the Snowe bill have the power to reach across the world.
As a non US citizen, as someone that is HAPPILY citizen of another 1st world country, I really resent that sort of power grab. I have enough crap to deal with my own Gov wanting to install ISP level filters to stop me looking at X rated porn because it's illegal in every state (yet the Australian Capitol Territory, where the federal government sits, it's 100% legal... funny that)

hey Harvey ....shit i didnt know porn was illegal in "every" state! are you sure?

if thats the case im in trouble lol (im in NSW)

about that time to take up arms and prepare a plan to protect yourself from our own government...

Sticks: Yeah, X and XXX rated porn... It's why you only see R stuff on the shelves.
Anything that graphically depicts penetration for a prolonged period gets an X... Anything with violence get's another two.
Ironically, bondage is fine, so long as they're not having sex at the same time.
Truthfully, every porno store will have X content, you just need to ask for it, and they'll probably have it out the back and it just accidentally slipped into a shipment... XXX is a little harder.
All this is from a mate that works at a SexyLand (we've known each other from before the job. It's not a friendship of convenience, dammit! heheh).
