is there a way to search for an exact term, for example now if you search "jack" you'll also get results for "jackson" ... how would you define the search criteria such that it would only give you results for the word "jack" with nothing before/after it in the word?

jack - broad
"jack" - phrase
[jack] - exact

or am I misunderstanding something? Seems like you're saying Google might be doing something even broader than "broad." Intredasting... intredasting indeed.

I get ya. It is not exactly possible.
Not sure about all the specifics but you could go into advanced search by clicking the gear in the upper right, and then there is a place for "exact phrase" and, "none of these words, title only, anywhere on the page," etc.

Or you could use some search operators. This would be shorthand for the above technique by putting your main phrase in quotes when searching and then a minus sign in front of the words you don't want.
> "jack" -jackson -jacking -jackal -jackalope

Hope that helps.

@hobbster that's the idea, but I'm looking for an "exact" for a single word and it doesn't work.

@Liam yeah I suppose negating all of the other words would work. Was just hoping I wouldn't have to do that. Thanks though.
