Seo advice needed

Hi folks!
Any seo experts here?!
I've a website indexed for some unpopular keywords, getting extremely low traffic. Recently it got google Pr 3 rank
Basically i did nothing to optimize it to more popular keywords.
Now, if I will change the content of my main page to something partially related, but optimized for a popular keyword, what will happen then? Will I loose the present rank?
How to figure out if it will be difficult to get into top 10 for that particular keyword?
Will my present rank of the page give me some advantage?

If I understand you right, you rank for some pretty cruddy keywords and want to improve matters.

OK, step 1, move your current content onto specific pages and link to them from your homepage.

E.g. www.yourwebsite.com/cruddy-keyword-one.html

Then, write a new content page for each of your relevant keywords, again linking them form your homepage and everyother page on your site.

The idea, much like a traditional log, is to have a site of severa dozen keyword targetted pages, with all pages linking to each other.
