So normally I just do freelance webdesign but one of my clients has referred me a possible SEO job. I took a look at his site and realized I could actually do a lot to help him.

He also has a horrible attempt at a SEM campaign directing all his paid clicks to his homepage that tells the current weather and the time.

The keywords he is trying to rank for are not that competitive. They all have around 200,000 results total. He ranks high on the third page for what I believe would be his main term.

Anyway I want a signed contract before I do anywork basically saying that I will do my best to to get him on the top 4 positions on the first page, but I can't gaurentee anything.

Does anyone have a contract they use that I could copy? Or can you point me in the right direction to write my own? (Preferably without a lawyer)

Charge a set fee for onpage optimisation.

Charge an ongoing monthly fee for link building.

Use your sales skills to explain that this is how he will get ranked.

If you want, include bonus clause for ranking at certain levels (20,10,5,1) and if he gets the rankings you get paid. If not, then he doesn't have to pay.

Interesting. I never thought of it that way.

@aim
I'd still like to see the contract, thanks.

That's an actual (unmodified) contract from some consulting I did with a group at Best Buy. Obviously you'll need to change the names and payment terms.

If anyone is wondering why I would work for only $999.00/month... keep in mind it was two years ago before my affiliate marketing took off, and it was a foot in the door with Best Buy, something I valued at the time.

awsome, i was looking for something like that. I know alot of people that need seo help, but they all want it for free. Or in exchange for lunch

To clerify, your protected from the "He didn't get me on the first page argument" because it isn't specified in the services to be preformed section correct?

Nobody can "guarantee" rankings.

That's why the bonus option is a good one.

That's not true.

With good link building, and a good aged domain. Anything is possible. We often beat bigger companies with our ranking.

It is difficult to guarantee #1, but at least first page, and we are talking about really competitive terms.

Yes it is true, STFU.

To clarify: NOBODY can guarentee what rankings you will achieve, there are WAY too many factors involved.

When I was in to SEO consulting, I eventually moved to structuring my services on a Pay For Performance plan - if I didn't deliver, I couldn't paid.

This is a win-win because it let's me essentially guarantee rankings but gives the client a fallback if those guarantees are never met.

Basically you setup three tiers, all with say, 5 keywords. When one tier hits the front page for all keywords, call it a milestone; each tier is worth $20,000 (name your price).

Well if Rand Fishkin and Aron Wall won't guarantee rankings to their clients, I am pretty sure I am not going to believe when you do.

Obviously you know nothing about SEM.

There are too many factors, so no one can rank to top? That's BS. We've done it, and we are stilling doing it.

Two simple factors:

1) Aged domain
2) Link building

That's all you need.
