SEO for a "top 1,000" site vs SEO in general

Hey guys,

Question: If you were doing SEO for a top 1000 site, how (if at all) would your SEO be different than if you were doing SEO for a fairly large traffic site (Alexa rank of say, 40,000)?

There are a few obvious things (like having a larger budget to play with) that would change things up a bit, but is there anything fundamentally different?

Four differences, off the top of my head, assuming they got in the top 1000 naturally:

1. They tend to already have a strong amount of "branded" and "generic" (click here, etc) links, so you can push harder with exact or partial match money terms.

2. They usually don't want low quality links (profiles, spun content, or from non-related niches). Even more so since JC Penny's and others got spanked for it.

3. There's usually a fair amount of backlinking that can be done with other web properties they already own. That could be obvious stuff like subsidiaries, their blog, employee oriented sites with public pages ( like the retirement benefit portal). Or, less obvious stuff, like PAC websites they indirectly control.

4. Their Marketing departments can usually help with "Co Branded" efforts. Sometimes they don't always take advantage of the web component of these things. Think stuff like "Official XYZ of the NFL". Many of them don't negotiate backlinks at all, never mind negotiating the anchor text. Same with things like charity sponsorships or College intern programs.

I interviewed at eBay for an SEO management position and their hiring manager mentioned to me that the core of their SEO campaigns is on-site. Majority of their team was dedicated to on-site coding and optimization techniques.

In general though, for top 1000 sites, content and social would be two additional factors. Most of them don't actively seek links like we do on this forum for our sites.

I think this is key. These types of businesses rely more on organic link and traffic building than they do on direct traffic generation.
