This is something i'm still undecided on. When building a blog to rank for "Product XYZ" or "Info Term ABC" is it best to use posts or pages? and why?

Only thing that comes to mind is LukeP saying to use pages. Other than that, when i look at other ppls shit, they all have posts on the front page, which have all their KWs

There is no real difference given you can use a post/page as the static, sticky any post and stick either in the menu.

I'm pretty sure pages offer no SEO bonuses over posts, or vice versa. I use pages for my T&C/Privacy Policy since I don't want them showing up on my front page, and have been using posts for everything else.

As far as a static page goes, I just change the date on the post I want at the top so that it appears up there. I think that by having posts instead of pages, every time you write a post it goes onto your homepage which keeps it fresh.

Yea I think its more of an organizational thing.

But it also comes into play when.linkbuilding.

You guys that use posts, if you want to build.links to a lontail, do u build them to the post page or the.main page?

Posts have Tags & Categories. That's pretty much the extent the difference.

You'd want to select page/post based on your site goals. If you want to have multiple authors (hello rel=author), tags and/or categories go with posts. Large sites become more usable with extra layers of organization, and of course they inflate your site pages & can rank and/or drive juice to your pages. Also by default posts have time stamps and can be scheduled to be published in the future.

Pages on the other hand are very basic. None of the bells and whistles above. They're great for simple, smaller websites. They shine as a tool to create your site hierarchy.

The great thing is they are not mutually exclusive. Use whichever accomplishes the specific goal.

Why not use both ?

it's mostly just an organizational thing that also effects SEO.

I want to use an example. Here would be the KWs in order of importance:

1) Dog Kennel Reviews
2) Best Dog Kennel
3) Are Dog Kennels Safe
4) Which Dog Kennel To Buy

My domain would be “DogKennelReviews.com”

I’d have 4 articles 500-1000 words for each of those 4 keywords

Now if I use posts, and I have 4 of them on the front page, I can build x,xxx links to my domain using all 4 KWs. Alternatively if I made pages, I’d have to build xxx links to each page for it’s respective KW.

IMO it seems like it would be easier for me to rank for all 4 terms if I made them all posts on the front page of my site, also link building would be a little easier since I can just build links to one url instead of 4.

Honestly this is all theoretical at this point, but I’d love to hear feedback on my thoughts.

EDIT: this is for a small site, looking to target KWs from 800-4400 Exacts

Advantage of posts is they have categories. So if you have a blog on dog training, and want the "dog training guide" pages to rank, and have lots of them, it may make sense to build links to the "dog training guide" category.

This.

I like pages when it comes to link-building, however. One of the latest slaps was for over-optimization. I had a site that got nailed down to page 12-14. I started building links to internal pages... Yesterday I showed up on page 2.

i'm trying to follow you here ...

so you had pages for your longtails but only built links to the main page? Then you started building to your other pages and began ranking?

i have been building sites with the home page being a static page, with a lot of content. then i bunch of different posts attacking my long tails.

It depends on your business models. A few strong products, i will go for pages and use post for content and news as complement. If you have quite a few products or autopost, i would use blogs sorted by categories and extended product descriptions..there is no one better than the other, imo

Use "pages" for keyword targeted terms.

Use posts for fresh content (keyword targeted or not), news items, or any time sensitive information. Interlink keywords in your posts to your pages, to help support them.
