I would like to set up a e-commerce shop for my forum.
I would also like to accept credit cards.

What is the best shopping PHP script out there? (freeware)

I am going to sell about 10 items at most. stickers hats for my forum.

I never like depending on other companies.

I found a script called OS commerce. Can I set up OScommerce with credit card?

Yeah. OS Commerce is really easy to use and install. You might also want to consider ZenCart I'm actually using that instead of OS Commerce because at the time I was choosing it was being more actively developed and had a lot of the favorite OS Commerce addons already included. You can see an example of a site I built using it here at Aloha Doors it completly supports credit card transactions you just need to get a terminal acct. or sign up with someone like authorize or something to handle the transactions.

OSCommerce is probably overkill if you aren't selling more than 10 items.
What are you going to use to process the credit cards? Paypal is one option that you can integrate into your website with "buy" buttons, etc.
Another option is Mal's e-commerce that you can use for the shopping cart part and it works with several 3rd party credit card processors.

I have to agree for something small like that the easiest route to go is paypal. Adding buy it now buttons is really easy and there are a lot of free scripts around to integrate it into your site. Search for php and ipn to find lots of scripts.

I opted for OS commerce, since it really fits my needs, but I couldn't understand the credit card part. So basically, I need to signup for an external cc validation service and transfer the amount to my account?

Yes, you need an external credit card processor. Then you set-up OSCommerce to work with it. It can be more than one.
The credit card processors have different costs - some have a monthly cost, some just a cost per transaction, some have both. Some keep a percentage held for a longer period of time so they can cover your charge-backs if anyone refuses their charge. Yes, they will likely all be able to transfer the money they charge credit cards on your behalf into your normal bank account.

With my OSCommerce I use PayPal and for the rest I save the numbers securely and process them through my Quickbooks credit card processor.
I looked into accepting payments through Google Checkout too but it was only open to the US at that time (I'm in Canada).
PayPal would probably be a good place to start and it is easy to get it working with OSCommerce.

Don't use osCommerce. It hasn't been updated since 2003. ZenCart picked up the ropes and is a modern shopping cart platform based off osCommerce.

does paypal get any commission? Does it directly transfer the money or wait for a certain amount to fill?

Rather than waiting for us to answer, you could always try visiting http://www.paypal.com

I have a PayPal business account, so yes, they charge a fee for using their service. I wait until I have over $150 in my account and then transfer it for free into my bank account - under that threshold there is a small transfer fee.
