Setting up a Windows VPS for Running Applications

Hi guys, I'm looking for some technical assistance from you server whizzkids.

I got a warning from my ISP that I'd been using too much bandwidth.

I've been running DFBLogin, Scrapebox, Megapinger, Proxyfinder and Market Samurai.

I've now got setup with a Windows 2008 VPS with VPSLand.

The 1st problem is this:Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration

every page I visit requests me to add it to the 'trusted sites' - I've gone into IE settings and attempted to custom change it by allowing ActiveX controls. but it didn't make any difference and I'm worried about messing with the security settings, because I figure they must be set up for a reason.

I would really appreciate your advice. I want to run all my applications on my VPS, so that it doesn't affect my home bandwidth. However, I'm learning as I go and a lot of this technical stuff isn't clear to me until I actually do it and then it makes sense.

The second problem is this:
when I attempted to run DFBLogin the error that popped up said: "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail."

1st: VPSLand is shit. I used them several months ago when I was just needing a remote desktop to run EVO II and scrapebox. The bandwidth and server was horrifically slow and they will shut you down if they get any spam complaints.

Now, to answer your question about the Enhanced Security with IE. What I do is go to the security section in the Internet Options and reset all zones to default. Then, I take the Internet Zone and start doing a custom setting, enabling or disabling notifications down the line. Pay special attention to allowing programmatic clipboard access and scripting.

Do note that for most applications you'll need the current .NET Framework.

I was recommended VPSLand so I'm hoping they won't be as bad as you said, but if they do turn out to be crap, who would you recommend I change to?

I will follow your directions and hopefully start getting these programs going.

Most Windows servers will be $100+ a month. I don't do VPS' since I run Xrumer on them and then run the less-intensive programs (SB, MegaPinger, ProxyFinder, Evo II, etc.) between runs and in the background during runs.

Right now I'm giving a dedi server from Barefootsies a try. It's going pretty well so far (1200 links/min during Xrumer runs at 70% CPU usage) for $150/month.

But since you are basically looking for a virtual desktop, you might check out these offers:

I don't know what Extor is talking about with not being able to run Hrefer and Xrumer at the same time, so feel free to bug him about it if you message him.

Fellow WF N00b here, but not new to the IM game...

VPSLand does indeed Blow, and it's only a matter of time until you have serious trouble with them.

I lucked onto PowerVPS from Defender Hosting when I got started in 2003 or so, and NEVER been even tempted to change. Their service and support is SO good, I have never seen the equal, and I have other accounts with Bluehost, Hostgator, etc. to spread out my C blocks.

Check them out, dude: VPS Hosting from PowerVPS. Choose from cPanel or Plesk, all powered by the Cloud.

That's not an Aff link- they don't even HAVE an affiliate prog. They don't want one- it's all about quality, not quantity with them.

They sound good, but they don't offer Windows hosting and because I am basically looking for a virtual desktop I would like to go with Windows at this time.

I'm definitely about to change though!
 
I had a setup similar to yours and I found that the guys who let you run forex bots from their servers don't usually have any issues.

Windows VPS

I used them, I had moderately low expectations in terms of support, however they instant activated and I never really had any issues.
