Shot in the dark here, but anyone own (or know someone who owns) a tattoo parlor?

Buddy of mine is a phenomenal tattoo artist, but is getting tired of working for shady shitty shops. Kind of wondering what costs go into this, profitability, things like that.

Here's a few examples of his work:

That's some awesome design! Well I know a couple of tattoo parlor in NY but they're not as good as with those designs.

I'm friends with a guy in Arlington, Texas Elvis Crocker II (You can look him up on facebook) that is known in that space. Toured all over the world doing tattoos including doing a ton of celebs in NYC while working there.

My buddy is a badass artist too.

He worked in a shop just long enough to get his license or whatever it is they need to be "qualified", quit and opened his shop the same day.

He works out of his house. His setup is 100% legit though. Everything is sterile, top of the line equipment, etc.

I think his initial outlay was probably $2-$3k.

He's doing well over $500 a day right now, just a few hours a day, and the only reason I can get any work done from him without waiting for months is because I know him well. He's booked out forever.

He's been doing it maybe 6 months now on his own. His only source of leads is word of mouth. He gives anyone who refers 5 new customers to him a free tat, and he has to turn down business these days.

Definitely possible to bank as a freelance tattoo artist.

I live in a town of maybe 150k people, we have something like 50 tattoo shops in town, and he stays more than busy.

a bunch of friends that have tattoo shops...one just started on in nor cal....they had the same problem, sick of working for flakey, shady people. their shop has been pretty successful. they opened in an area that did not have any other tattoo shops (small town).

i am not sure if this is ok (if not please remove link) but here is a forum for tattoo shop owners Tattoo Forum & eZine | Last Sparrow Tattoo

maybe someone can answer his questions there.
