Should I blog about my region or nationwide?

Hey guys,

I have settled my first blog idea around tickets: sports tickets, concert tickets, theater tickets etc. I have seen some good affiliate offers that I can slip into my blog and I have an interest in the subject so I look forward to starting it. The thing is tickets are region specific and this gives me issues when I try to figure out what my target market is.

I see two options: I could concentrate only on ticket events around my area (southern california) but this would give me less material to work with as well as eliminate a huge audience outside of my area.

The other option is to go national, but now I have way too many events to cover. This could be a good thing because then I could choose to promote only certain events (according to what I think my readers would be into, or what tickets pay the best commision) But I may be speading myself thin by trying to do that. Is some guy in Texas going to want to read my blog if I only mention an event happening in texas once a week or less?

Any advice what I should do?

Thanks!

I'm not a pro blogger yet, so take my advice with a grain of salt:

Your blog can start small and grow.

Take craigslist for example. started off for SF Bay area only, now everyone on the planet goes there.

While your blog isn't making any or much money, it might be smart to test your local market first. Try some offiline marketing to drive traffic, and figure out a good rythm so that when you decide to spread into other regions, you'll have a system in place, and you'll know how much to spend per visitor.

Again, I certainly haven't done as much research as you should, but that sounds like it makes sense.

yeah, definately start local. if you were going to expand, I would expand one market at a time rather than trying to go after everything

Cos America is the whole planet, right Dubya? :error:

He's right though, start small and focussed. Either on local events or focus on a particular sport or genre of music...

Become the best source of information for Granny-gansta-rap, Venezuelan electro-house, tribal-post-punk-hardore-dub-fusion or whatever floats your particular boat.

Ummm, if you say so Queen Mother

LOL. The Queen Mum was better than our princes that like to play at being soldiers!

More Alexa users visit it from other countries than I thought and I like Alexa - they make my blog look popular!

I can only really speak for the UK.. but most people haven't heard of craigslist over here - the number of listings on there shows that. (untapped opportunity for any spammers out there maybe!)

Thanks guys.

I'm probably going to run my blog for a week or 2 without doing anything but fixing the site up and writing blog articles. So no advertising for a while. When I run a PPC campaign will I be able to specify that I want traffic only from my area? I sure hope so!

You definitely can with Adwords, not sure about others.
