Does google recognize subdomains as completely separate websites?

i.e. sub.mydomain.com
sub2.mydomain.com etc....

If so does this mean I can use a slapped keyword on a subdomain of the original website and start fresh on QS?

You can use them to make your URL more appealing - they do not have to be a real subdomain!

buythisnow.mysite.com
mysite.com/bythisnow

Both are OK, and equal to mysite.com in the eyes of Google
